These are folks we interact with in forum and they have choices to make. Their job is to maintain the integrity of the site, not to make you feel like you can exercise your freedom. They make judgment calls.

Here's some reality. If you poke someone with a stick, they're less likely to do you any favors. Some will bite back. It has nothing to do with justice. Just friggin common sense. You poke alot of folks with sticks around here. Don't be surprised if you don't get touchy feely in return.

Actually, that is a pretty good summary of what I was thinking about writing when I read the above posts. As admin/moderator one has to make judgement calls, and judgement will include looking at the content of the post, the choice of words, the reputation of the author and the context/time in which the post is written. Looking at recent history, in terms of threads started and discussions had, as well as the whole lot of flack received by the admins in a certain thread (which was closed by me on the public forum, but which lasted for quite a while in the collaborators zone), it's obvious that one of the admins decided to not let Textbook's thread run it's course.
As to why this one is not closed I can only guess, but I reckon the relatively civil manner in which this issue is being discussed here.

The reason I can only guess is related to the only flaw in your post: since last week, I am no longer on the admin team and I don't have access to the admin zone anymore.

^Wow. Just never noticed that.

I got a private message from a higher up saying "thanks for that Textbook, why don't we just let people destroy the site".

This is what I'm talking about. It's a massive over-reaction. Does anyone that the censored posts were, or are capable of, destroying the site?

Admins are people too, is what the general consensus is. If I knew Dean in person I'd probably develop a contemporary respect for the man. As it stands, I only know him as well as I know most folks on this site. 'Tis a shame, 'cause I imagine I'd have a really good time hanging out with more than a couple people here.

And yeah - comin' straight from da underground.

SD: I believe in transparent government and so I refuse to handle things like this in PM. What are we hiding from people? Here I am, here's the things I say, like them or don't. That's how things should be handled.

If someone says something relevant in a PM, it should be revealed so the dialogue can continue in public.

However, as you noted it was sent to me as a PM and so I am not naming the person who said it to respect their wish to be anonymous. But I'm not going to pretend it wasn't said.

Once you've spent some time as one of the real human individuals making decisions for groups of people, you'll get a little bit of what's going on.

It's quite difficult to be even handed and generous when those you're making decisions for are petty and adolescent. Much easier if they are simply friendly adults. Common courtesy is common for a reason.

Keeping dirty laundry private is more to protect folks like you than those in charge.

You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all.

I think it may be more that you should not criticize anyone; members, Collabs, Admin, whomever--  seriously, what has anyone done here - other than artists whose work is on the site or posted in the Forum -  that is worth criticism ?    People are here to either enjoy or contribute to the site, and neither of those activities warrant a critique.   Everyone just does the best they can, and if there's an issue between certain parties than it may need to be resolved.   But that is different from issuing a report card, which is more about judgment and narcissism than anything else.

I've had a few of my posts censored, reasonably, which I was okay with. I'm not even sure what "fuddy duddy" even means, but it barely seems serious or offensive in anyway. I'd probably giggle if someone called me that, and I'm younger and way less mature than probably all of the admins.

That being said, I'm not meaning to be critical of the admins. I think they do a good job and generally have good reasons for doing whatever they do, and I think I speak for most of the members of the site by saying that we are thankful for the job that the admins do on this site.

but f**k da police.

To the person sending me PMs: I'd rather not PM, but I have sent you in compromise. I believe a discussion about the quality of moderation should be had in public. I also believe you hugely misunderstand me. You paint me as some sort of forum destroying villain who has waged a campaign of hate on the mods and wants no moderation at all and that is simply not true. I simply thought that in this instance you got it wrong and I told you so. I didn't ask for anyone to quit, I don't think anyone needs to quit, I was just going "Hey, I think that's a bit trigger happy". You're free to reflect on whether that might be true or dismiss it. I'm not your boss, but I use the site, I give it traffic, I'm feeding back on how it's run. Maybe I don't deliver that feedback in the most ideal way possible but why should I be expected to, no one's an ideal person.
As for your assault on my character, it's true that I come across as acerbic because I don't self-censor and water down my opinions to make sure they make everybody feel cosy. I call it honesty, you can call it being obnoxious or arrogant. I'm comfortable with that, it's not a "one must fall" situation.

Yeah it's true that I don't go around pointing it out every time good moderation is done but I'm generally unaware of any modding that doesn't affect posts I'm involved in and besides, in politics/business, silence is often approval anyway.

I can't find a single thing wrong about how the admins here handle any situations.

Textbook, I believe that if you tried your stunts on any other sites, you'd have your virtual knee caps removed.

You can't go around insulting and criticizing people (including admins) and then slime your way out of it by stating that it was all well intended for the good of all and in a spirit of good nature. Our friendly neighbourhood people's revolutionary and martyr.

You have problems, mate, get help.

Robert: I think the place would be better if the mods weren't so out of touch. By drawing attention to it, change may (or may not of course) eventually come about.

My concern with what you're doing is that I don't believe you're close to achieving what you want to with your efforts, which makes your behavior appear delusional.

I would also argue that rather than being a 'strange tack' - a refusal to engage with your OP is a comment all on its own.

Npjnpj: I post on lots of other forums- this would easily be the most conservative of them in terms of moderation. In fact, that is the basis of the complaint in the first place. It is just simply not true, at all, that on any other forum I would have my knee caps removed for saying "Hey I don't think that should've been modded".
I think your impression of me is coloured by that Beastie Boys thread and I think you are the slimey one who simply posted to show how on message you are.
Anyway, I'm fine with letting this go now. I had a complaint, it was heard. If people keep saying things here I'll keep responding, but otherwise, show's over.

Robert: Alright, I'm a crazy person. The moderation is infallible and no one should ever say otherwise because it's just not possible that a well-meaning mod might get a bit heavy-handed. The day is saved. Woohoo. Pats on the back all round.

I do understand what you mean Textbook I really do. I actually agree with what you are saying. I don't see anything you posted as being too bad. But that's me. I have had many posts hidden too. i didn't agree with them too. Some that were hidden i just plainly didn't see the reason at all.

Also, in fairness of disclosing PMs, I also got one from a prominent user who says he agrees with me that the moderation is too conservative but that the place seems to be incapable of having a dialogue about it so he's kept his mouth shut. I'm sure you'll all think I am making that PM up but I am *not*.
