I am somewhat new to Camel, but have been enjoying what I've heard. The first album I got, and the only one I've really heard thoughtfully and enough times is Mirage, and that one I liked a lot as a whole. I also got "a Live Record", with the whole of "The Snowgoose", so once I hear enough of it I'll have enough material to make a list. I also got the compilation "Lunar Sea"... but as a matter of fact, what I had in mind while buying it was that I wanted to buy "Moonmadness"... found out about my mistake once I had taken it out of it's wraping, and then didn't dare to try to ask the store to give it back. Anyway, I don't think I regret buying it.

I totally agree about Lunar Sea. Heart's Desire/End Peace (for me it is one song) is actually my favourite Camel song! I like Single Factor and I agree it is underrated. But then again, my tastes are a bit crossover sometimes. It is fresh indeed. |

3.78 | 25 ratings A Compact Compilation 1985 Review by clarke2001 SPECIAL COLLABORATOR Eclectic Prog Team
This is a a very good prog rock compilation, and a good vivisection of band's career.
For some reason, the tracks from the first albums are not included here, neither the
tracks from the newer albums. Fine. I first discovered CAMEL through their
masterpiece, "The Snow Goose", then I discovered their debut, and then this nice
little compilation record. It was a record on right place and in right time, at least
for me. My only negative remark about this one is the inclusion of perhaps a bit too many songs from "The Snow Goose"; of course this is not necessary bad, because it's a nice thing for a newbie to discover, and all the songs from that instrumental album are awesome, hands down. But honestly, I don't like to see (and hear) a different parts and excerpts of a conceptual piece out of its conception. However, this was a huge discovery for me. It struck me with equal strength as CAMEL struck me when I heard them for the first time: "Freefall", "Lady Fantasy", "Metrognome", "Lunar Sea"... what an incredible collection of songs. We can always argue the selection of the songs for a compilation, but in my opinion, this songs are the most essential CAMEL tracks and the best tracks in the same time (and these are two different things...just check the majority of compilations by other "big" names...most of them are overplayed, if nothing else). This is not only an excellent introduction to the world of CAMEL, it's also an excellent introduction for a newbie into the world of progressive rock music. |

Good selection, Clarke. In those years there were no dispossable the rights of the first album (published ty MCA), so many compilations doesnīt includes that essential tracks -except maybe some alive version of NLG . Itīs incomplete, but Iīm agree with your point, itīs a good introduction -to the greatest music ever composed!

Any "best of Camel" without "Ice" is seriously delinquent.

Well, Ice is not in my Camel top 10, and would not be in my Camel top 20 either. Do I have to wear one of those suits with horizontal or vertical bars now? |

Good idea. It would take a lot of work. But I have the tracks , I only need to create a good song order.
So out of all their albums I'll include
1 from Camel 4:47 min
3 from Mirage 15:59 min
6 from Snow Goose 14:46 min
1 from Moonmadness 5:02 min
1 from Rain Dances 4:29 min
1 from Breathless 7:20 min
1 from Nude 2:39 min
1 from The Single factor 3:34 min
Total Time: 64:29 min

Yeah, "Ice" isnīt in my personal list neither! :D Ja. Itīs an OK track, but not represets the best that Camel can offer in terms of sensibility and/or complexity. Itīs a bit redundant and the motive, simple at best, a bit too much "recreated". The duration screw up the emotion that attempts express, too.

There are plenty of instrumentals better than "Ice"; "First Light" and "Elke" are far superior

I am no expert on Camel, but I've been revisiting "Moonmadness" recently and really dig it. Espeically "Song Withing A Song". Is there any connection between Camel and Sopwith Camel? Is that a dumb question?

^There are no dumb questions, only dumb people. Just kidding, actually at one time I wondered the same thing, but no, there is no connection.
Let's see. I'll still have to work out the running order and make sure I fit the time constraints once I get home, but: Rhayader Rhayader Goes to Town Arubaluba Ice Song Within a Song Lunar Sea Rajaz Hour Candle Nimrodel/White Rider Lady Fantasy

I don't really like anything they did after Breathless, so at least I have less albums to choose from!
This is 3 seconds over the 65 minutes! Am I allowed to get away with that? If not, just replace the live version of Lady Fantasy with the Mirage version, which will chop off a minute and a half.....
1. Never Let Go (A Live Record) 7.21
2. Song Within A Song (A Live Record) 7.01
3. Rhayader 3.01
4. Rhayader Goes To Town 5.20
5.Lunar Sea (A Live Record) 8.56
6. Rain Dances 2.59
7. Highways Of The Sun 4.32
8. Breathless 4.16
9. Echoes 7.22
10. Lady Fantasy (A Live Record) 14.15
