I'm glad you like it Steve. Always room for some more Krautrock heads around here. Has been kind of slow the past couple of months - so it is great to have you aboard.

I am visiting an old fave of mine called Think - Variety. Great combo of psych and fusion with a slight nod towards the end of the 60s.

I love that Think album David, thanks for that.

Well they are listed under Jazz/Fusion here as are EX-MAGMA that David just mentioned. On this thread we don't have a black and white attitude towards what's Krautrock and what's not, it's just us talking about anything that's even close, like Psychedelic/Space Rock and trippy Jazz/Fusion, especially if it's from Germany but not necessarily. Point taken though.Big smile
Some excellent bands straddle more than one sub genre, like Dzyan, who are just as jazz-rock, really, as krautrock. Could call them either, i guess.Great and under-rated band. Have talked by phone to their guitar/sitar player Eddy Marron-nice chap.(and a brilliant musician) Have you guys heard the band  that Dzyan became called Giger, Lenz and Marron? They are totally awesome, and put out two records, Beyond and Where The Hammer Hangs
Very good point about bands crossing the genre lines. On this site it's set up so a band can only be in one genre, but on for example the RYM site they are tagged often with multiple genre titles.
Also i have my music sorted by genre and because of that i might have some albums from a band in one section and others of their's in another because they've changed their style. Actually i have early Kraan in Krautrock and their later stuff in Jazz/Fusion.
I'm very familiar with Eddy Moran from Vita Nova and Dzyan but i've not heard of that later project so i'll check them out. Thanks ! The man can play guitar.

Great to have you back up in this place JohnHug

And just like you said, we, at least some of us, work with a somewhat loose definition of Krautrock that opens up to a lot of different genres such as fusion, electronic and psych. I too have my early Kraan and Exmagma in the Krautlands of my collectionBig smile
Regarding RYM and the whole tagging thing, I think it could be interesting to have multi-tagging as well. We'd be facing a lot of Swedish acts in Kraut as well - such as Älgarnas Trädgard, Kebnekaise, Arbete och Fritid, International Harvester and Fläsket Brinner.

I should mention that i listened to Guru Guru's posthumous release called Live In Germany 1971 tonight. Recorded by Radio Bremen after the release of UFO and Hinten, this one kicks some serious ass !  The three songs are extended from their original studio lenghts as we get over an hour of Krautrock from the boys.
Hi, Mellotron. I have the Missus Beastly live album as well, and really like it. Don't have Vita Nova, but have heard it and like it, and it is on my wish list. That live Guru Guru disc sounds interesting. Giger, Lenz and Marron are definitely too jazzy to be ever considered krautrock like Dzyan are, though, but they are very inventive all the same. Their albums have never made it to CD yet.

It took me a long time to fully appreciate Vita Nova's album and i think that's because it is a little too all over the place. Lots of variety and probably the reason they have it listed under Eclectic here. It was released in 1971 but has a strong sixties vibe. Hey i'm glad you have that live Missus Beastly because that's a keeper man.

I just got this fabulous album called Gurumaniax, and what an album it is!!!
Featuring both Mani and Ax this one is damn near as close to an original Guru Guru release - had it not been for the involvement of bassist extraordinaire Guy Segers off Univers Zero!!! Rrrrrraaauuww!!

If anyone here thinks this sounds like a tasty combo, then here's a clip from the album:

^^ Good stuff, it really does sound like Guru Guru!  Is that a recent release?

btw, once when I was reviewing Ax Genrich's "Wave Cut", I misspelled his name "Gingrich" by accident, much to the editor's amusement.

Damn that made me laugh like a little schoolgirl Steve...
Ax Gingrich.....

On topic: yep this is a fairly new release from 2010, and you're absolutely right about it sounding like Guru Guru. Great stuff indeed.
BTW I saw you talking about your affection of Canterbury in another thread, and I wondered if you have heard a German band called Nosferatu? They made one album back in 1970, which combines both Canterbury and Krautrock resulting in a very seductive groove. It's got a huge gorilla on the cover as well, but I can't show it to you right now, as I am writing this on my phone.

Nope, never heard of that one!

I really dig how the track develops into these beautiful atmospheric flute emanations lead on by a mumbling bass line and some gentle percussive work.

I loooove David Axelrod(Damn fine name as well), especially his debut, but I don't think he belongs anywhere near Krautrock PierreLOL He is symphonic first albeit with a twist.

I am so impressed with Gurumaniax. And i don't know why but the thought of Segers from Univers Zero playing in a Krautrock band is mind bending.  Great album though as i listened to it on the way to work, none of these guys have lost a beat.

That's an interesting combination of elements.  It reminded me a little bit at first of Captain Beyond, kind of a psychedelic/prog hybrid - but CB wouldn't have had such a lengthy mid-section like that.  They hit upon a really neat sound in that mid-section, just freaky enough to raise my eyebrows ("far out!", they were heard to say), but not so freaky as to sound contrived and excessive (not that I mind that either...he he).  Interesting stuff, thanks for that.

John: I find it a tad suspicious that we quite often seem to go hand in hand musically. Are you by any chance spying on me you crazy man?LOL Seriously though, I fully agree with you on that release - it is just mindblowingly sweet to hear these guys play together, and on the face of it one wouldn't really know that they're somewhere between 80 and 300 years old...

Steve: I'm glad you liked it. I feel somewhat guilty - just hurling vid after vid after you, but it sure feels nice having you around here. So yeah, do feel free to stop me when you think it is getting out if handLOL
BTW I really like music that's contrived as well - it just has got to have some soul.

Yeah the picture of the boys(Gurumaniax) in the liner notes paints something you might see at the Senoir CentreLOL. The music of course paints another picture. A picture of three ultra talented musicians who still kick ass !.

No problemo David, I like sampling new things I haven't heard, particularly if they're related to my favorite genre (Cuban Banjo Music Krautrock).  Keep em coming as you see fit, but I can't promise I'll like all of them.  I can promise I will give them a listen when I get the opportunity, and will try to respond in a thoughtful, honest manner, avoiding phrases like "it sucks" in favor of more constructive phrases like "my goldfish just died".
