People are being silly on the TFK Yahoo group. Some people do not have a sense of humor, and take things too personally.
Anyway, is this the new cover for the album? The Yahoo group link didn't provide a direct link, just to the artists page. |

As far as I can tell, yes that is the cover (minus the band logo and album name, of course). I was a little unsure how I felt about it, but that also happened to me with Unfold's cover. That turned out to be pretty cool, and I think this one will too. It's the same guy that did both Agents of Mercy covers (the third is just that picture of Nad and a horse), and it's pretty obvious looking at it now. Anyway, can't wait for this album.
As for the Yahoo group, that sort of thing flares up every now and then, usually because of something Roine writes. Some people just need to chill out a bit, and remember that many people don't really care to read their political and religious interpretations of things. I actually spend a lot of time discussing such things, just not on music related forums. |

i really like the cover art. the music on the vids sounds really good too. nothing stands out, but i'm keeping in mind that this will take time to get into. the new drummer really seems to fit in and i love seeing hasse sitting there swirling his red wine!
so, we got the new TFK, and HFMC and then that Hasse/Bodin thing about global warming, right? oh, and a new Lalle Larsson too.

Actually, I find that cover to be fantastic, much better than most of the digital art made for other Flower Kings' albums. This seems more serious, although it might look odd in comparison with the rest of the covers. It reminds of this:

When an album was vinyl then the album art was very important (if the music was up to scratch of course) - I still have all my gate-fold sleeve albums - think I might frame some for prosperity.....and hang em up on the wall.....bet the Mrs will be pleased !!!! Inside of "Close to the Edge" would be my first pick - sublime art from Roger Dean.....

Whats their best live album?
Is Unfold the Future their best album? I only have Retropolis, and Adam and Eve, and Sum of No Evil |

Their best album? That depends on each fan. For me, yes. Why? Cause it finally shows The Kings playing an eclectic style, somewhat ala Tangent, with lots of jazzy leanings. But it's not The Tangent, it's The Flower Kings' cheerful symphonic prog with memorable melodies and compositions, PLUS some fun experimentation like jams or odd instrumentals (for the band). If you like The Tangent, or if you like jazzy stuff mixed with straightforward prog, then you should get it. Would you care listing those 3 albums you have in your preference order? That always helps to know what "type" of Flower King fan you are, or will be, although there are various "types" heh.

I also think Unfold the Future is the best album, and a great one to get since you already have a few; not to mention you already have 2 of the 3 albums with the best rhythm section of Jonas and Zoltan.

Cheers! I am a fan of Retropolis, then the new one then adam and Eve./
I heard some tracks from Unfold today and really loved it. Are the earlier albums completely different or like Pallas or Marillion's Neo?

The earlier ones are all pretty much like Retropolis in style. That is my favorite Flower Kings album, by the way, followed by Unfold.
Basically, World Of Adventures through Flower Power are all quite similar in style. After that, things changed a bit, but the big changes were on Unfold. Paradox Hotel is also a somewhat different Flower Kings album. For me though there is really two phases in their catalog: The Flower King (Roine solo album that basically started the band and style) through Flower Power. Then Space Revolver through Sum. I suspect the new one won't be a new phase, but it's hard to say now based on the few snippets I've heard so far. |

I would say absolutely not, Scott. Pallas & Marillion in their early days mainly took their influences from Genesis. TFK was a Yes influenced band.

I think that the earlier stuff also has Camel influences, but I thought that Stolte was more influenced by Genesis than Yes? and Stolte's own style is more Gilmour than Hackett and he is only very occaisionally like Howe - and thats usually in the non-soloing part of his playing - Thats the beauty of TFK - a heady blend of Floyd/Genesis/Yes/Camel with the occaisional snippet of ELP n King Crimson. Coupled with extended instrumental passages that surpass all the seventies bands...quite simply stupendous.....

Style-wise, Stolt's playing is very Floyd or Zappa-esque, depending on the song; but of course he has his own distinct style and choice of notes as well.
Compositionally, besides the jazzy side of the band, I find the music is more Yes-influenced, with some ELP (mostly in their earlier albums) and King Crimson, but also with some Zappa moments as well, usually during crazy runs or some complex keyboard melodies; this is especially noticed during sections where a marimba sound is heard. The Genesis influence is felt as well, but not as much as others like Marillion, Spock's Beard/Neal Morse, etc. Jonas being in the band really mixes things up. Sometimes it's like if Jaco Pastorius replaced Chris Squire back in 1972 or something. What I like about TFK, is even though they have a lot of influence from many of the classic 70s bands, they do stuff that those bands would never do, back then or now. Many times, I feel like TFK are Yes taken to the next level, what with all their other influences, go in further directions than Yes could have dreamed of. |

To add to what I just typed, when you take an album like Paradox Hotel into consideration, everything I said pretty much gets thrown out the window, as far as compositional influence is concerned. Those songs, aside from a couple of moments, are very hard to figure out the influences, and really are unique songs and just sound like The Flower Kings, but more "artsy(?)", without feeling like "Here's the Yes part, or the Pink Floyd part" (again, except for a couple of moments).

Perhaps it's just me - but I have never listened to any Zappa - I have too many other directions to send my ear that I just haven't had the inclination.....This might seem weird to a lot of you.... Never listened to any cantebury stuff either really.
I still have about 200 CD's that I have only listed to once.....just not enough time....

So how does everyone feel about this?
I'm excited to hear how those sounds will be incorporated into the TFK sound. |

Yes, so am I, and they are clearly going with the trend that is apparent amongst other retro/neo acts in recent works, i.e. with a darker, heavier edge.

I understand about how there's too much music. But if you're that into the Flower Kings, you owe it to yourself to at least hear a couple Zappa albums, particularly the ones that would really show where Roine and the gang may have gotten some of their influence from. Psychedelic Postcard is very much '60s-Zappa, but most other TFK stuff seems more influenced by Frank's '70s and early-'80s output. |

Like Beardfish? Imagine TFK with a verse or something, featuring some "growls". I wouldn't be entirely surprised, but I doubt it'd happen. Getting heavy is not really new for the Flower Kings. The Devil's Playground has a few heavier moments. I can see it being somewhat like how Transatlantic get a little heavy here and there, like in Stranger In Your Soul, or moments during The Whirlwind. The latest Agents of Mercy album "The Black Forest" had a couple heavier moments too. |
