I think W. genuinely thought he was doing the right thing. I used to think that decentralization would fix a lot and it might, but there's a culture change that needs to happen first.
Individual and social needs BOTH must be maintained and prioritized. Some things are best left in the commons and some left to individual actors. Seems obvious but the Cold War f'd us all up on that one.
I absolutely would prefer bottom up solutions to top down. But the reality there is also that real systems are going to have forces working in both directions whether you like it or not. We can hope to direct and shape these systems to some degree, but probably not change their inherent characteristics, and certainly not completely control their dynamics.

You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all.

I am sure he thought so, that's why I feel bad. He has no idea.
Hell, I wonder if he even truly know how unpopular his administration was by the end. Here and abroad. Like I said, can only work for the best we can. |

They didn't arrest my DARE cop for doing the same thing.
I still have my shirt from the program. I wear it to the gym. Maybe it's sad that a shirt I got in the sixth grade still fits me. Hmm. |

I remember DARE...especially when the cop would bring in the drug case. Dozens of drugs in there clearly labeled what they were.
Man, that sure made it easier to identify what sh*t I was buying ![]() |

I know. It saved my life. It also tipped me off to the fact that my dealer was jacking the price up on me.

What I'm really concerned is how heroin these days can be found in a boy and in 50 packets! Heroin used to be more exclusive....

As I sit here and drink my beer, I think back on how indoctrinating those DARE programs were.
They have done more harm than good. A person who tokes occasionally doesn't turn into a drooling lunatic overnight. Instead, he likely realizes that nothing bad happened, he feels pretty good, and either goes about his life or tries worse sh*t until he really does wind up in an addiction. Either way, he learns that authorities in his life are unreliable, which is a lesson I wish my students could learn in a hurry. |

Of course it's totally uncool to diss pot, but I don't think its all that benign as i once did. Of course I realize it isn't some highly dangerous nasty thing, but I think it has the potential, however small, to ruin some lives. Setting aside potential lung damage I think there can be a creeping effect on some people who smoke a lot, a general change in how motivated they are, possible behavioral changes, perhaps an effect on their life that isn't obviously direct but for which a constant desire to be high is a catalyst. I'm not going to say much more because it would involve giving details about real people, but lets just say I have witnessed people whom I believe have been affected negatively by weed. More than one. I have 3 or 4 old friends who had different kinds of problems exacerbated by their usage, and i firmly believe they have paid for their years of recreational use. I'm not saying everyone will have a bad experience, so chill you weed fans. I'm just saying I think there is a dark potential for a percentage of people who become weed fans. For those kinds of outcomes and for those who pollute their lungs to excess, I think for the most part the drug's image gets off pretty easy these days. I think young people are best off not starting weed, cigs, or any drug. I also realize that's pretty unrealistic and I'm not judging anyone. Just my opinion.

I always thought so. How many people were smoking the sticky bud by Freshman year of HS? At the very best, DARE was pointless...at worst it garnered more interest in it! A handful bought into it but most of us just laughed about it and thought when the DARE cop came in to health class we just had an easy class off ![]() Real great program eh? Nah Jim that's not so much the point, and I'd think most people would agree kids shouldn't be doing it. Just DARE is a waste. You're gunna try it/do it or you're not. And it is kind of misinformation as well, I mean I know the official jury is out but we're all taught the gateway drug thing. From 8 years of HS and college observation of people that seems like utter BS. All the "this is your brain on drugs" commercials, it's just a waste that makes some people feel better while kids ditch 8th period to smoke weed ![]() Edited by JJLehto - April 11 2012 at 03:10 |

I'll take you're word for it. I wasn't talking about DARE at all as I don't know much about them. I was just talking about effects I've seen on the lives of friends. Take it for what it's worth, as I said, I'm not judging anyone.

That's what I mean: Young people should receive accurate, levelheaded information, not fearmongering- because eventually they will realize that the grown people lied to them: "Hey man, this isn't so bad," and when we kid ourselves about potential danger, we set ourselves up for disaster. |

Weed and alcohol should be treated like they are in other countries (at least the latter) where families can discuss about it without it being taboo and can even introduce the damn thing themselves so all that aura of mystery and unlawfulness is removed. In a way, recognizing their existence, talking about their disadvantages, trivializing them in a way, would work so much better than making them such a matter of attraction for young people. I guess the idiots who come up with legislation were never young because they can't understand young people tend to f**k things up and do as they please when they are told they can't. Also, sharing a glass of wine with one's son/daughter to make them try the thing and remove the magic off it should be a free decision by parents and not carry out the danger of the fed knocking on your door (fed as in federal agents, though soon even The Fed will find ways to mess with your private life).

I always used to fly in/out of Denver, but apparently I missed out on the good stuff.

Apparently, pressure works. Zimmerman just got charged with 2nd degree murder.
Or maybe a thorough study of the case made prosecutors do it. I hope this is the case. |

All I know is people are ignorant and at swayed. Students at my school immediately jumped to Martin's defense for the dumbest of reasons (No kid deserves to get shot! That guy was a racist a****le!). I've had to breathe deeply just to explain to them this concept: "No one presenting any information knows everything." |

Let me highlight a piece of that for all y'alls.
It's a disgrace that man hasn't been dragged out of his house and tied to a car and taken away. That's the only kind of retribution that people like that understand. It's a disgrace that man hasn't been shot yet. Forget about him being arrested--the fact that he hasn't been shot yet is a disgrace. That's how I feel personally about it." |
