I love the laptop I have currently.

I'm fairly good at keeping all my computers in good condition. I had a laptop run on Vista for 3 years for godsake. LOL

My current computer has been running three years without a reformat. But it's Mac, so that's not really hard. (I did have to buy more RAM in December but, I started with 2 GB so...)

Admittedly I haven't got a new Windows computer since this one so I can't comment on Windows 7, but even in XP I had to reformat once or twice a year, and yes, I did have an antivirus and spyware busting software, I took good care of it, but it just got slower and slower. 

Now I'm stuck with a Vista on my Windows PC/music server that I use only for iTunes and internet browsing, and it can barely handle that with 4 GB RAM. But I've had it on pretty consistently for close to a year now, which is pretty good for a Windows machine.

I don't think I'm going with Windows 7 on this one. Debian 64 sounds enticing.

I think Windows 7 works fine, had it for a couple years now, just as fast as it was.

Windows 7 is great. Mainly, cuz it's actually POSIX compliant, but it uses less memory whilst idling than XP does.
