Thanks to recent new albums by
The Time (under the name The Original 7ven),
The Family (fDeluxe), and
Sheila E. my interest in the period of popular R&B music known as "The Minneapolis Sound" has been rekindled. Specifically the time period from the early to mid-1980's, just funky and fun music. I love the
Prince albums
Dirty Mind and
Controversy, as well as recordings he produced for others such as
The Glamorous Life and
Ice Cream Castles. I also love the jazz albums Prince recorded as
Madhouse.
Here's Wikipedia's description of this style...
Wikipedia wrote:
The Minneapolis sound is a hybrid mixture of funk, rock, pop, R&B and New Wave that was pioneered by Prince in the late 1970s. Its popularity was given a boost throughout the 1980s, thanks to his musical adherents, including The Time, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, Morris Day, Vanity 6, Apollonia 6, Ta Mara & the Seen, Sheila E., Jesse Johnson, Brownmark, Mazarati, and The Family.

I know this music is far removed from Prog, but does anyone else share any love for these bands/songs? Certainly not all were equally great (and some mentioned in the Wiki article I never heard of)
