Yes, when I lived in Tennessee there was a really nice one around where I lived. Two screens with two film each. food was much better than normal concessions as well as cheaper. For two back to back movies it was like $7 too:) A real gem!!!

Nope, I think there is one that still operates in the entire state of NJ, and that was a bit ago it's also probably been closed down by now.
Shame, seems like it'd be pretty cool. |

The goddamn local Starbucks at 3 pm. "Hey everyone, let's all yell things instead of talk like normal people." Sigh.

I feel old because that annoys me too. I mean I'm only 25. (Wait, I'm 24). And I already sometimes think of teenagers as "them damn kids!"

Yep, I think the last one I saw was WALL-E and another one.... Get Smart maybe? It was a few years ago and it was a double feature. I've seen a number of movies at the drive-in, though. Used to go there all the time as a kid as well.

I thought of teens as "gah! damn kids!" when I was 16
And yeah, as Stephen said the drive in/local hangout places have been replaced with online gaming. |

yes Northern Cal still had a few when I was a kid, the two I remember seeing were Bambi and much later Die Hard
-- kinda fun if you like sitting in a freezing cold car with the window rolled down to allow for the pumpkin-sized speaker which sounded like crap to be heard as you squinted to see the ancient, tattered screen with an unfocused image and braving the crowds to get some "food" avoiding the roaming derelicts and drug pushers as you made your way back and to the realization that whatever was happening in the car was far more interesting than what was happening on the screen. |

I'm not sure we've ever had a 'drive in' here in the UK. The weather is too terrible for such things.

I've seen a lot of movies at the Drive-in. I can't really go through a list. Obviously with my age, most came in my childhood so I have a poor memory anyway. They would always be double features. The second feature would start to I think like 10:00pm which meant as a child that I had no chance of not falling asleep for the second movie. I do remember seeing Halloween H20. It was the last movie I ever saw at the drive-in. I more distinctly recall the snack-shop advertisements and playing Frisbee before the movies started.

Yes. A few times as a kid my parents took me. I remember seeing Bambi at the Drive-In while laying/sitting in the back of our station wagon. Most recently, about 10 years ago I remember seeing the Casper movie at the Drive-in. I think that it might have been a double feature, but I can't remember what the 2nd movie was, or if I even stuck around to watch it.

What's a movie?
Good god I can be so witty I still don't understand how I live with myself. And no, drive-ins sound annoying.

How dare you be so beautiful? Are you kidding? If you have comfy car seats and a decent sound system it can be a lot of fun. Hey we still have one functioning six screen drive in in the Atlanta area. http://starlightdrivein.com/#/movies/. I think that may have been the one the family went to when I was kid and they had a double feature of Young Frankenstein and The Towering Inferno. Memory is a little fuzzy but... It's pretty much a US thing then isn't it? It was really big in the 50's. But for the few surviving ones the audio is on radio. In the older days they had this speaker for you to bring in off a pole and hang on the sill of your car window. Edited by Slartibartfast - February 27 2012 at 14:15 |
