Hi guys. The instrumental crossover prog project "Purple" has a new album out called "BODY:MIND:SPIRIT" - check it out at http://www.purplemusic.org - I'd love to hear your thoughts I was here a couple of years ago with my last album, and was very encouraged by the response. I'm not strictly "unsigned" rather "self-published" - all my music is free to a good home. |

Hey Dan, last.fm only streams 30 seconds clips instead of the full tracks, don't you have a Bandcamp page?

All three albums are available for free download from mediafire if you follow the http://www.purplemusic.org/ link, & hit the 'enter' button once the site has loaded. The albums are located on the left hand side, and as well as downloading them you can stream them and read about them there too. There is also a blue 'download' button on the initial page that loads from the above link - this takes you straight to a mediafire download folder where you can select the latest 'Body:Mind:Spirit' album either as a zip file or three individual mp3 files.

When I saw the thread's title I thought you meant Deep Purple.

Thanks David, I wanted to listen without bothering with the download and all the related tasks (for examples I don't listen anything unless it's properly tagged).

I understand what you mean - with the number of samples you're having to get through these days anything to simplify the process has to be welcome! In this case though you can actually download the tracks as individual mp3 files for each album rather than a zip if that's what you prefer - the zip contains a comprehensive set of fairly large pdf files in an 'artwork' folder which you probably wouldn't want. The tagging is fine as far as I can see - album art is embedded, as well as copyright and legal info, & the tracks are encoded at 128kbps. As for last.fm, the tracks do play in full if you select the 'play radio' mode rather than selecting the individual song titles - unfortunately they are mixed in with tracks from other similar atists...great for someone like me who likes to discover new music, but no good for someone who's got a dozen other pre-evals to do before they go to bed!!
As for the music, it's all instrumental - and the tracks are long! The first one that played for me on last.fm in radio mode was "11 Bells" from '11 Bells'. Well actually "11 Bells" IS '11 Bells'! - The album is just one massive 59-minute track (though it does stop briefly for breath about half way through. Very pleasant music - a bit Mike Oldfield-like I suppose, so I guess this would fall on Crossover's turf - & there's certainly enough material to move the thread from Unsigned to Suggest New Bands, as long as the fact that it's being distributed for nowt doesn't matter!

Hi Guys Thanks for the feedback. A lot of people seem to mention Mike Oldfield in connection with this, and seeing as I deliberately set out to follow the same ethos of long but varied instrumental tracks this is gratifying. This is also not the first time "crossover prog" has been used as a label - I tend to think of it as accessible prog, you don't need to be a proghead to appreciate it, but given I'm a pretty dyed-in-the-wool prog lover the complexity of prog creeps in. The problem at Last.fm is annoying, I admit I hadn't tested it and so I thought it was playing full tracks. I'll look into it, and I'll also look at the bandcamp option. I have a reverbnation page but their limit on track length is ridiculously short (for me) so I used them for previews. The tracks for download are all pretty fully tagged up - I swapped from downloads at Last.fm because they recode all tracks as they upload which removes the tags. I objected to this because not only does it remove the copyright info, but also the ISRC information (the music equivalent of ISBN). The boundaries between "signed" and "unsigned" are getting really blurred these days, and I'm not sure where Purple stands technically in that. I have done the legal minimum to set myself up as a sole trader for publishing purposes (which really is not much more than saying "I'm a publisher" and registering with PPL). I guess technically I'm not "signed" to myself because I don't have a contract with myself. I'd be very up for being moved to Suggest New Bands Incidentally, if anyone is interested, Purple is on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/Purpleproject and on twitter at https://twitter.com/#!/PurpleBMS |

Bandcamp is brilliant. You get your own bandcamp.com address, unlimited storage, once you upload a single, lossless audio file (such as a .wav), they convert it to every conceivable format your fans could possibly desire (mp3 320kbps, FLAC, Apple Lossless, AAC, Ogg Vorbis etc.), they give you the flexibility to distribute your music for free, charge a set price for it, or let fans name their own price, with the minimum chosen by you - it's entirely in your hands!
It also provides you with detailed real-time statistics regarding who's linking to you, where your music is embedded, which tracks are most and least popular, what's being downloaded and when; it gives your fans easy tools to share your music with their friends via blogs, social networks etc; it allows you to sell both your physical merchandise and your digital music simultaneously (and in virtually any currency you choose), ie. you can give your fans the digital files immediately, and then ship out their merchandise at a time that's convenient to you; there is a Facebook app which puts all the functionality and content of your Bandcamp site into a tab within Facebook (really excellent!!) If all this wasn't enough, they even allow you to customise the domain name of your bandcamp page to suit yourself - ie. you could have had simply http://purplemusic.com for your site name, if singer songwriter John McKenna hadn't got in there first...but I'm sure you could find something else!! The only real downside I have found with it is purely from a user's perspective - there is no facility built in to adjust the volume of the player - you have to do it via your hardware! Quite incredible that they have not included this when the site does just about everything else imaginable, and all other integrated music players seem to offer it ...I'm sure there is a valid reason for it though. Check it out...http://bandcamp.com/

OK update on Last.fm, they are not making it very clear to find what you want. when you go into the album page, under "tracklist", if you click on the "play" icon you get a 30-second preview. If you click on the track name instead you go to a track page, if you then click on " Play direct from Purple (Dan Hodgson) (27:00)" you get the full thing. However, this is all really un-obvious and if I can find somewhere better to stream from I will do so. Just off to check out bandcamp - thanks for flagging that up Yam Yam :) |

So it took a little while, but the album is now uploaded to BandCamp: http://purplemusic.bandcamp.com/album/body-mind-spirit BandCamp is pretty cool - unfortunately the tracks for my other two albums are too long for their file size limit. I'll be playing with formats to see if I can make it work somehow. Thanks again for bringing it to my attention :) |
