Topic: Just found you but long time prog lover Posted: January 31 2012 at 03:31 |
Greetings all!< ="text/" ="" ="/B1D671CF-E532-4481-99AA-19F420D90332etdefender/huidhui.js?0=0&0=0&0=0">
I've been appreciating prog archives for my music research for quite a few years but only now decided to actually explore the community here.
I would call myself a music FIEND. I've been one since early childhood and yes... I am a woman. I say that because I very rarely find a kindred female of the species who is really into music the way I am. Almost always it is men I've related to on this topic.
I am very, very eclectic in my music tastes but prog is very close to my heart and really has been since... um... lets see... I think I can track my strong love of it to my 16th year of life, which was 1984. I was really into New Wave back then and had purchased tickets to see Berlin as an opening band for Yes on their 90125 tour. I took along my sister who was 9 years senior to me and we trekked to McNichols arena in Denver, CO only to find that Berlin had cancelled and Loony Tunz cartoons had taken their place. Really, at the time all I knew of Yes (so I thought) was "Owner of a Lonely Heart". I was really bummed about Berlin not showing but my sister reassured me and said, "You'll really love Yes. You've heard a lot of their music, but you just don't know it yet. You'll see."
And man..... That concert was the most outstanding concert I have ever seen in my life, and by now I've been to a lot of concerts. It was just... heavenly. And yes, the whole time I was going, "Oh.. I know this one!" I went right out and got the 8 track... yes it was what my car had in it at that time... of Fragile. I was totally blown away and have been a lover of prog ever since.
As far as music in general.. I am constantly, and I mean constantly, on the search for new and inspiring music and bands. I tend to get into a certain genre big time for a period of time, then get burned out on it and hunt for something else.
Here is a funny story about that:
I've always been a lover of 80s New Wave since that was the music of my teen years and so in the mid 90s I was on a yahoo group for 80s music. Around that time I would periodically hear or see some mention of "Goth/Industrial" music. I was very intrigued and so I started asking everyone I knew what Goth-Industrial music was but no one could really tell me. At that time it was hard to discover new bands and genres online and we only had dial-up internet. A great guy on the yahoo group knew some about it and put together a mix tape for me of some samples of things he was guessing I would like.
A whole new world opened up to me at that point and I was in love! I found out about bands like "Dead Can Dance", "Switchblade Symphony", "Bauhaus", "Cocteau Twins", and many others. I went out and got some CDs of my favs then, but wanted more.
I found at that time that the only real way to get to know that kind of music was to go out to where they were playing it and so we found out about this Goth club in Detroit, MI (where we lived at the time) that had a "Deep Dark Retro" night. So started the era of discovery where we would go there every week, me armed with pad and pen. Every time I would hear some new song that sparked my interest, I would run up to the DJ booth and have him write the name of the song and band down for me. Then I would go home and to CD stores and find more by that band. We discovered our fierce love of "The Cruxshadows" this way when we first heard "Marilyn My Bitterness" and were walking on air!
It was pretty funny though because some DJs don't have the best handwriting I guess and at one point I was found in the CD store hunting for albums by "Wumpslut", which is actually "Wumpscut". Oh gee.. So anyway we were really sucked into the Goth club and music scene for the next 5 years and then moved to The Land of the Blue Jeans and Lack of Culture otherwise known as the Kitsap Peninsula in Washington. So passes an era.
Nowadays I am down and disabled with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia and really the discovery of music via the internet is my life line. I literally spend hours and hours every week and most days playing with my music files, ipod etc. and discovering music online.
When it comes to prog, my new thrilling discoveries of the last year have been:
Glass Hammer, Renaissance, Old Genesis, Unitopia, Ayreon, Par Lindh Project, Phideaux, more Moody Blues, Pink Floyd, and of course... YES.
I found this forum tonight while googling info about the new album by the Celtic Christian prog band, Iona. I also then discovered a new band also... yeah! Mostly Autumn.
Hope to find some friends and kindred spirits here.

Lirazel - welcome to our little corner of the internet; excellent introductory post & I get the impression you'll enjoy it here.
A vast majority of the community are open, friendly & more than willing to answer any questions/supply recommendations (some of them are even house-trained, too).
Enjoy your time with us
best regards,
Jim

Well, you certainly come with a well developed taste in music, Lirazel, starting with Yes from the 90125 period (which I still love) through goth and all and finding some real prog gems through the years. Welcome!

A lot of us are long time prog lovers but I have been pleasantly surprised by all the younger prog fans we have here. I got into it when it was supposedly dieing in the late '70's. It may have waned a bit in the '80's but thanks partly to this site I have discovered artists that were new in the '90's that escaped my notice. I can't say I've ever gotten a personal recommendation that I didn't like. You've listed more than a few artists I don't know. Here's a couple I discovered thanks to this site that are lesser known you might want to check out: Knifeworld and The Reasoning. Phideaux is one that I can credit to this site. Welcome and try not to get overwhelmed. It won't be easy.

Not sure, but I think I may have been responsible for Opeth being added many many moons ago, just after they released 'Damnation' (not long after the forum actually started)

Hi L.O.
Glass Hammer, Renaissance, Old Genesis, Unitopia are my favs too.
Don't take this wrong, you may want to report to the nearest genetic analysis lab so they can figure out why you, being only one in a million girls that are into this kind of music. Wow. That way they can make more of you. So YES or Glass Hammer concerts are not 99% guys.
Cheers!

Funny you say this. This is one of my lonely angst things also. Its also one of the things that caused my hubby to fall instantly in love with me. When we first met he about fell out of his chair when I said I loved Yes, and not just the 90125 stuff. I really don't understand why prog is a mainly guy thing. I just don't get it.

Hi Lirazel,
I posted some of my wacky theories in our thread on women and prog. What do you think?
Funny you talked about your husband's reaction to you liking YES. One time on a first date, I saw my date had
Nektar - Remember The Future in her collection. I asked her to marry me, right there.(Thankfully she said no, because
I found out later she could be an axe murderer! - No joke, in her bedroom was a GIANT oil painted picture of her
in a blood stained wedding dress holding a knife) Lesson here is that just because a person is into prog does not make them an ideal mate. But I am happy it worked out with you and your husband.
I personally think that women may actually be a bit more intelliegent an the average guy, so I do think a lot of it is simply lack of exposure to progressive music.
Welcome!
P.S. Did you like the Jon Anderson photo I posted in my introduction thread?

Actually, I'm not finding this the friendliest place so far. Apparently several people here already believe me to be either an idiot or a troll. < ="text/" ="" ="/B1D671CF-E532-4481-99AA-19F420D90332etdefender/huidhui.js?0=0&0=0&0=0">
I'm not sure I should post here.. I have a brain disability and it causes me to have a terrible memory and to put words into my sentences that aren't quite right. It used to be I only had this problem with verbal communication but now it is showing up more and more in written which is freaking me out.
I hope I can find a place to settle here where people are patient with me and I can make some good friends. I'm very lonely in my music loving, esp. as a woman.

Hi Dennis! < ="text/" ="" ="/B1D671CF-E532-4481-99AA-19F420D90332etdefender/huidhui.js?0=0&0=0&0=0">
I LOVE that pic of Jon Anderson! Oh wow. What a spectacular treasure! BTW.. I love and have all of his solo stuff as well. It is at the top of the list of "feel good"' music to me. Also I liked what you said in the other thread so much I am reposting it here if you don't mind (see below)
I totally agree. I grant my love of prog to exposure, an open minded searchers attitude, and a general, lifelong love of music in general.
Thanks for being nice! Lirazel
The monkey-dance mating ritual theory was covered already so I will humbly point out 2 other reassons why I think we have this phenomenon. 1. Simple exposure 2. Woman have been left out of all boys club of music. Exposure I - As an Alice Cooper, Elton John loving 13 year old, I had a music appreciation class freshman year HS. The teacher played on a decent stereo.... Rick Wakeman (after Jackson Brown) then ELP... and I was hooked! I went out and bought Rick Wakeman LPs then Yes, etc.... Exposure II - I recall going to a party in 8th grade and a girl had an ELP - Brain Salad Surgery record. Well at that time New York's WPLJ had ELP muisic in their TV commercial! See the connection? Prog is not promoted via radio or the media so it is hard for anybody to be exposed to it. Exposure III - Before I met my wife she was into dance - pop rock - whatever pop de jour. After seeing YES ONE TIME (with Benoit David, thank you very much!) she LOVES YES. It was Steve Howe's playing that actually got to her. She herself decided that we would travel to see them the next night as well... She loves ELP as well & Glass Hammer... =========================================================== Music was largely a men's only club. In the 70's (my generation) women were not in prog or rock bands(Heart was the only band I think....) Women were very much stereotyped. Women should be models, actresses, teachers, maybe doctors but NOT rock musicians. This all slowly changed so today, girls in bands are no big thing. Back then, Led Zep, Pink Floyd, Grateful Dead, The Who, Stones, AND all the prog bands were ALL men. These bands were the heroes of men. Most guys wanted to play like them and BE like them. What did that music offer a girl? Oh, yeah,to be that folk singer Joan Baez... That was pretty much it. Cheers! Ok, just my $.02.

Hi Lirazel,
I am so happy you like the JA photo, it was taken with a very old Nikon film camera with a cheap telephoto
lens, so I was thrilled when I saw that enough light came into the camera, obviously I couldn't use any kind of flash or strobe.... I just think I found where I put the negatives, so I plan to upload a full resolution image for anybody here. Also, I have the absolute coolest picture of a mandolin ever taken! (It was during Steve Howe playing "Onward" at SLO. I will locate that and scan it as soon as I can. I have never shared these pictures before, but after reading many posts here, I have seen so many nice, even tempered people. I hope the photos will find some good homes on some computer desktops and walls!
Hang in there around here. I guess any forum can get ugly at times, but this place seems as cool as they come, in
my experience. Plus this place seems like the best place to keep track on what is going on. Reading here i just learned:
Art In America is putting out a new CD (their first & only is a classic)
Jethro Tull is making Thick As A Brick II
and more importantly, I can post here my expressions of interest to YES with Benoit David & now Jon Davison,
without being branded a heretic, (by the JA worshiping crowd) and get burned at the stake for it!
Though I still cherish and play regularly, JA's Olias Of Sunhillow.
