He is famous for creating what some may call art, yes.  It depends on what your definition of art is though.

He's a pretty famous guy actually but not so much outside of the US.

Yes but some of it can also be heard.

As I said though, he was not an artist (so he wasn't a painter) but he created what some may call art (depending on what you call art).

He actually had a day job but he's far more famous for other things relating to the arts.
