What a nice son......my son gave me Snakes & Arrows Live DVD couple Christmas's ago.....That one is a great concert too.....Although we enjoy the part of making of the movie skit, Geddy and Alex are pretty funny!

Rush are my No1 group!

I made a list recently here on lists section,  "1001 Prog bands you must hear before you die!" and Rush have 13 entries.

A question...

Has anyone heard the new Rush  Time Machine   Live DVD and CD - I have the Cd and noted Geddys voice is very pitchy becasue he had a cold.

That ruins the experience and yet they brought out a DVD too. Why would they do that - why not wait till he was at his best cos thats now going to be selling worldwide and its an inferiour Rush. Very sad and I am putting off getting it on DVD.

I read a scathing review today on the CD and it is sad that the thing was ever released. I love Rush but they have to reconsider some o the plethora of Compilations churning out recently and now Live Cds.

having said that the ABC Live CD was great focussing on a classic 70s concert.

The band sound fantastic and full of energy.

I noticed the wacky vocals as soon as the concert started, but I think Geddy became more self-aware as the show went on and he sounded like he was trying harder to sound better. I didn't notice bad vocals after the first few songs but perhaps I grew used to them.

I haven't seen that one, but Time Machine has some nice comedy skits as well. Alex Lifeson in a fat-suit is win.

Both the CD and DVD are tough for Ged on the vocals due to the cold......But it was their only Cleveland show and I think more than anything they wanted to pay homage to the city that gave them their big break on the radio.

They too have been my #1 band for way too many years!!!! With Genesis #2.......rightly so.

Both are amazing but Rush just keep getting better......its so hard for me to think about the day we will not see them on stage anymore. Cry

13 entries! I never counted them.....sounds like I need to review my spreadsheet again.

Hmm.  I love Rush and all, but doesn't that seem a bit excessive...?

You have a spreadsheet?Cool

13 Rush albums and I did not choose them on purpse cos its Rush its just that those specific albums were in the top 15 highest rating albums here!

No complaints here as Rush are brilliant - during the 80s they all but saved the 80s from a horrendous album selection, along with Marillion.

^ Geddy's voice has certainly become much "warmer" since the late 70's albums.....I for one have never had a big issue with his sound, besides I never bought into Rolling Stone reviews much anyway, they have always had their own agenda.
Only recently are they trying to get on the better side with Rush, only because they realize what importance they have made all these years and certainly RS does not want to miss an opportunity to sell magazines.

Yes I do have an excel spread sheet of the 1001 albums. I added columns to show what albums I own and in what media type I own it.....Vinyl, CD, Digital file.
Then another column which has a purchase ranking 1-3.....1 meaning find it now!, 3 meaning no rush.

I've been getting some Rush albums the last few months. I have been enjoying them quiet a bit. So far, I have gotten "2112", "A Farewell to Kings", "Hemispheres", and "Moving Pictures". As soon as I'm satisfied that I've gotten into "Hemispheres" well enough, I expect to get "Permanent Waves", and thus complete the most praised albums from them. So far, at first listen each album feels a bit too familiar and similar to the previous ones I've heard, but some time later, I get the albums better and apreciate them for their individuality. I'm still waiting to get "Hemispheres" before I choose if I'll be wanting to get the rest of their discography or not... I feel it may already be too much... perhaps I'll just take some time to get some albums from other bands before returning for the rest of the Rush albums.

It's all actually very good.  Tough ones for me to get into have been Counterparts and Vapor Trails.  I'd say the run up to and including Roll The Bones is greatest album run in rock, prog or otherwise.  just incredible, memorable melodies on all of those albums.

Funny....I just listened to Counterparts and Vapor Trails this past weekend, start to finish several times. Reason is I just did some cleaning to my CD player and let those run.
Both those albums to me are excellent, superb lyrics on Counterparts, with very heavy Lifeson guitar and power drumming from Neil.

Vapor Trails is one of my favs...so many great songs with Secret Touch and Earthshine being my favs.......and VT holds a special place as that may have never been had Neil not decided to come back to music let alone Rush.
Those two were never hard for me to get into......Probably the hardest one for me is Roll The Bones.

Yeah, that was the impression I had, after the "essential" Rush albums, I would have to get the first (and suposedly best) of their "synth" era albums. Perhaps that album having a stronger synth presence will have a refreshing different sound. I guess it will be depending on how I like that one that I will choose if I get more albums or not. However, it should be a few months before I get to buy that one.

Signals is the last 'best sounding' album they put out.  it still has analog synth and that 80s sound hadn't totally come in yet.  it really is a sister to moving pictures.  very warm production, but clearer.  something happened in 1984.  i guess some guy invented a cheese sheen button and convinced EVERYONE to use it on their albums.Cry

My first Rush purchase was an LP of A Farewell To Kings back around 1977 or 1978,then i got Hemispheres on cassette when it came out and 2112 too.I continued to buy every new Rush album that came out until Signals.I had a really hard time with Signals.I remember playing that over and over and it just not clicking so i threw in my glove compartment in my car and sort of forgot about it until sometime later when i came across it.Well i put it on and it sudenly made sense to me.I mean it was so different from all their other albums at that time.Anyway when Grace Under Pressure came out i passed and continued to do so until the late nineties when i eventually got back into Rush.

Oh i meant to tell you guys that in High School back in around 1978 i took Art and the teacher had a turntable at the back of the class and he told us we could bring in any music we wanted to and play it once his teaching was over. The only band he said that we couldn't play was Rush.True story and i'll never forget that.I guess he didn't like Geddy's screeching voice or something.LOL
