Now I'd like to share some very dense dark ambient with you. Saċad is an electronic music duo from Toulouse, France that primarily make a very claustrophobic and somehow angelic dark ambient, and this Raincoats EP is one of my favorites by them that was released earlier this year in June. Most music in the dark ambient category is highly cinematic, or reaches a certain level of cheapness that only reminds the listener of some Lord of the Rings RPG or something, but Saċad's version of the genre has none of the rattling chains and demonic growls and instead opts for the sounds of harsh wind and distant celestial choirs from the most appealing of sirens. Also, when compared to most dark ambient, I'd go as far as to say that Saċad is probably the "happiest" dark ambient I've heard. Enjoy!

Listened to no. 10 the other night reminded me of a cross between Andrew Chalk and David Tudor's Rainforest with a bit of an amateur-ish (not a bad thing) feel.

And a happy new year to all! I've been listening to this album titled Collage by Oomkah Dee/ Black Sky Chant that was once upon a time recommended by The Truth (and here). This album is made up of 2 long tracks with each at about 30 minutes in length and containing a lot of character. The foundation that these two tracks build on is primarily ambient, but unlike most ambient, each track varies in mood throughout its runtime and periodically incorporates sung vocals, beautifully played string instruments, piano, and (mostly in the second track) an almost dubstep type of beat and drum track. Parts of the album sound vintage and other parts sound very modern, which also adds a depth to this album that most releases of this genre don't usually have now days.

I'm ALL for wtf music - but this piece just isn't adventurous as it thinks it is. What might help is a dose of microtonality, or more noise, or less recognizable instrumentation (guitars?), or rhythm, or...

But - believe me when I say I've heard worse music in graduate school recital halls. Ugh...

I am a huge Deftones fan, so I frequently search for news of a new Deftones album, updates about Chi's progress with recovering from his recent coma, and news of any projects that the members might be involved in. I didn't like Chino's projects all that much for whatever reason, but Stephen Carpenter (Deftones' guitarist) teamed up with some guys and a member from Cyprus Hill to create Sol Invicto, which is equal elements dub, drum & bass, industrial, and metal. Their Initium EP is available for free, and though it's not prog at all, I did find it to be thoroughly enjoyable. I'm about to study for a test so I won't get all colorful and ridiculous in describing the sound of the album, but I will tell you to at least check it out if you like Stephen's low-tuned, churning guitar chugging style that he uses on Deftones' heaviest songs or if you like industrial drum & bass that isn't intended purely for dance. Enjoy!

Another one of my many non-prog electronic selections, although loosely prog-related electronic: Givian is the music project of artist Keala Bowden, who has made the artwork for the Beardfish albums Destined Solitare and Mammoth, as well as the Romantic Warriors DVD. Earlier last year, Bowden created a thread on PA about this music project of his which only 3 people replied to, and I've been listening to this album off and on since then. Though I do think Beardfish is one of the better retro-mentality prog groups of the 21st century, Givian's debut album, Upperfriend, does not sound at all like an electronic Beardfish. The closest that I can come to comparing Upperfriend with music by another artist is Flying Lotus' Cosmogramma, which is an album I admittedly don't enjoy very much because it seems too random for almost its entire duration. Upperfriend has the same tendency for randomness and even shares the same jazzy undertones, high-pitched and thin synth noodling, and strong instrumental hip-hop vibe. However, many of the tracks on this album have a glistening quality and also a faint touch of rainforest-like atmosphere that makes this album a bit different. Enjoy!

But it has all of the above mentioned at at least some points in the song...

It's a great piece, regardless of some people not liking it. There's nothing wrong with it. Tongue

This is interesting. Sounds like psychedelic kraut noise. Some of the metallic echoing effects make this sounds like a krauty version of Vompatti's Golden Cliffs.

Recommended to me in the earlier months of 2011 by harmonium.ro, Kingdom by Parachute Pulse has since been and off-and-on favorite listening experience for me during my frequent gloomy nights. This music is based on a Harold Budd type of piano-centered ambience, but I personally think Parachute Pulse's music is a bit deeper and definitely a lot more active. Aside from the prominent piano, there is a strong use of echoing, the kling-klang of various objects, choir-like vocal drones, and skittering electronics. The effects added to and on top of the piano generate both a certain warmth and coldness that I have trouble describing. It's almost like the warm radiance of the sun, but also acknowledging the chilling internal feeling that you'd have when you notice that you're drifting too close to the sun towards an imminent disintigration. Or perhaps like being in a dark, damp cave with the view of a small opening above where rare angelic natural light beam is shining through. Either way, regardless of my colorful and undeniably gay explanations of the music on this album, Kingdom is definitely worth checking out if you're into ambient-inspired electronic music that isn't just an impenetrable boredom-inducing drone.
