I'm lookin to buy new headphones and narrowed it down to 4 choices and would like to know which yall would suggest
AKG K271
Shure SRH440
Audio Technica ATH M50
Sennheiser HD448
I'll mostly be listening from an iPod so any info about amps would be helpful
My music is mostly metal (opeth, cynic, btbam, aal) but i also listen to a lotta rap(aesop, eyedea, old jazz rap, stuff that isnt really bass intense) and electronic(flying lotus-esque stuff).
If there are any other headphones, im open to suggestions, not exceeding $130 preferably

^ true.

Hwever, none of them are suited to iPlod use as they are all medium impedance and the necessary headphone amp will blow your $130 budget easy - better to buy low impedance ones designed for portable use, such as the Sennheiser HD 229, where you'll get the loudness without an external amp.

Would the hd448 need an amp aince its 32ohm?

You can use them without, but the bass response would be improved with an amp due to the output capacitors on a standard iPod - for a good bass response a low impedance headphone or an external amp is best the solution as you cannot change these capacitors. Also the volume will be less with 32 ohms than 16 ohms.

It's not always possible is it? At least in Israel they won't let any headphones out of the box until you try them and won't always even agree to give you store credit. Why? Because Satan, that's why. In general there probably isn't a more money sucking product than headphones. Considering every time I leave the house I need headphones, otherwise people might start a conversation (oh god no!), then I shall destroy headphones once every half a year, because they're so damn fragile. I finally went sorta expensive and got the Sennheiser HD408. I don't think it's anything like what you wanna buy, but in general I like Sennheiser's quality quite a lot, and usually when I have expensive headphones- it's probably Sennheiser.

LOL

But to do it you must stand in a pentagram wearing all black with red face paint and you must scream "SHOW ME YOUR SECRETS" before you plunge your head into the abyss.

That is so much a better response than try all four and pick the one you like best. LOL

If you insert the proper apostrophe in y'all all will become clear for you.  However if you stick one in isn't your brain will be totally messed up for the rest of your life.  If metal is your thing I'd recommend shoving an electric screwdriver into you years.  Until you bleed out the ears you will never totally appreciate metal. Wink

I have a pair of Audio Technica ESW9's for portable use, they do the job quite well. Although new they are quite pricey, if you keep an eye out you can usually find a pair used not to far outside of your budget.
