I think the term field is throwing you a bit.  I don't know another way of describing it without giving it away.

It is a physical field that requires training and skill but it doesn't require making anything (like a craft).

Regarding my guess: David Levy is a Scottish chess player, born in London 1945. He has written more than 40 books, but he’s mainly known for his work with chess computers. It all seemed to fit … but then I’m sort of glad it wasn’t him. It would have been a little creepy.

Ah, no, he's not a Chess Player either.

He's not written 40 books... less than 10, I think.  He used to write for a journal/magazine though.

I'm not sure whether to give a clue... it could make it far too obvious.  I won't for now.

Not sports, no.
