Older pot-smokers have sharper minds

  Link

Past or present drug use doesn't seem to damage middle-aged brains, a new study finds.
British researchers studied the mental sharpness of thousands of 50-year-old subjects,
and found that those who had used illicit drugs—mainly marijuana—actually performed
better than others on tests of memory and other brain functions, Reuters reports.

The middle-aged tokers may have scored higher than others because the drug users
tended to have a higher education level than non-users.

"The results seem to suggest that past or even current illicit drug use is not necessarily
associated with impaired cognitive functioning in early middle age," the lead researcher says.
"However, our results do not exclude possible harmful effects in some individuals
who may be heavily exposed to drugs over longer periods of time."

Hopefully not good deed goes unappreciated:

U.S. rescues Iranian hostages, with good timing

Despite recent tensions between Iran and the United States, the U.S. Navy announced on Friday it had rescued 13 Iranian fishermen being held by Somali pirates in the Arabian Sea.

Fox News reported that an SH-60S Seahawk from the guided-missile destroyer USS Kidd detected the pirates while a simultaneous distress call was received from the Al Molai fishing vessel.

A team from the Kidd subsequently boarded the ship and detained 15 suspected pirates who had been holding a 13-member Iranian crew hostage for several weeks.

“The Al Molai had been taken over by pirates for roughly the last 40 to 45 days,” Josh Schminky, a Navy Criminal Investigative Service agent aboard the Kidd, told Fox News. “They were held hostage, with limited rations, and we believe were forced against their will to assist the pirates with other piracy operations.”

“When we boarded, we gave them food, water, and medical care,” he added. “They had been through a lot. We went out of our way to treat the fishing crew with kindness and respect.”

Schminky said the captain of the Al Molai “expressed his sincere gratitude that we came to assist them. He was afraid that without our help, they could have been there for months.”

That's spooky, I just watched the group for the first time in many years yesterday, which I only started watching many many years ago when I saw "The McLaughlin Group" in the TV schedule and thought it was, well you know. LOL

It started me out on taking a bigger interest in politics.  I was surprised that John is still alive.

Same here Slart, it was the show that kinda stoked my interest in politics many moons ago.  I even remember Jack Germond!  What I liked about the show was that complete political adversaries could have a spirited debate but were not only civil, but also entertaining.  You grew to like them as people, even the ones who were on the other side of your own views.  I believe John is now in his mid 80s, so I’m not sure how many more years we will have the pleasure.  Watch it while you can folks!

Slave homework upsets people

  Link

Third graders in in Gwinnett County, Ga., were given math homework that asked about slavery.

Christopher Braxton told WSB-TV in Atlanta that he couldn't believe the assignment his 8-year-old
son brought home from of Beaver Ridge Elementary school in Norcross.

"It kind of blew me away," Braxton said.

The question read, "Each tree had 56 oranges.
If eight slaves pick them equally, then how much would each slave pick?"

Another math problem read, "If Frederick got two beatings per day,
how many beatings did he get in one week?"

Another question asked how many baskets of cotton Frederick filled.

"I was furious at that point," Braxton said.

Roach said the teachers were attempting to incorporate social studies into math problems.

Derp derp derp...

Casual Marijuana Smoking Not Harmful to Lungs

Of course, you can't legalize it.

"Stop killing our nuke scientists"
Iran seems to think Israel is responsible...

   Link

Motorcycle riders flashed by and attached a magnetic bomb onto a car carrying a nuclear scientist
working at Iran's main uranium enrichment facility. By the time the blast tore apart the silver Peugeot,
the bike was blocks away, weaving through Tehran traffic after the latest strike in an escalating covert war.

The Wednesday attack - which instantly killed the scientist and fatally wounded his driver - was at least
the fourth targeted hit against a member of Iran's nuclear brain trust in two years. Tehran quickly blamed
Israeli-linked agents backed by the U.S. and Britain.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton denied any U.S. role in the slaying, and the Obama administration
condemned the attack. However, provocative hints from Jerusalem reinforced the perception of an organized
and clandestine campaign to set back Iran's nuclear ambitions.

This is how it's done, if Saddam was such a threat he should have been taken care of covertly.  Bin Laden could have been dispatched in similar fashion by W.
