If you're younger than 18

I'm a couple years past 18, but I've only recently come to appreciate prog metal, I recall being mostly enamored with King Crimson and Brand X prior to becoming legal. 

I do however have a relatively large group of musician friends that found their way into the classics (and a generally wider breadth of music tastes) through prog metal.  It seems to be a gateway drug to the wide world of prog, and I see no problem with that.  Also, to be fair, I'd have been much later down the rabbit hole without this site and the pointers of a few people in the generation above me.  It's just not very easy to stumble upon the diamonds in the rough without a little shepherding.

I just kind of assumed the topic was addressing a phenomenon, or something. Though it is true that many consider prog more sophisticated, so maybe they're suggesting a level of maturity for younger people who appreciate it? *shrug*

Note "probably". This doesn't make you a superior being, or something, but objectively, artistically, this means you likely value creativity. There are those who like music, and those who like creativity, and those who like both. None of those people are bad people.
