I'm a couple years past 18, but I've only recently come to appreciate prog metal, I recall being mostly enamored with King Crimson and Brand X prior to becoming legal.

I do however have a relatively large group of musician friends that found their way into the classics (and a generally wider breadth of music tastes) through prog metal.  It seems to be a gateway drug to the wide world of prog, and I see no problem with that.  Also, to be fair, I'd have been much later down the rabbit hole without this site and the pointers of a few people in the generation above me.  It's just not very easy to stumble upon the diamonds in the rough without a little shepherding.

IMHO

Nowadays it's quite hard for the young to get into prog, and prog metal is a good way to do it. I actually started with DT, like many others i suppose

My progress:
Before 16 no music at all (my geek era, where I was a bookworm and a good kid)
After 16
hard rock>>metal>>progressive metal>>neo-prog>>no music>>70s prog>>???
and yea it was after 18.

Well, I'm 22, now, but I've been into various forms of progressive music for a while. Sure, my introduction to it was Dream Theater, but I wouldn't say I was just into prog metal. Hard to remember a time line.

Threads like this make it seem like it´s some kind of huge accomplishment for a young person to like prog. Or atleast that´s what I feel. Conversations that are had in the Internet confuse me....
But to all of the under 20 year olds or actually to everyone at this site I say: Good for you! I had the most fun I´ve ever had back in the day (7 years ago or so) when I started listening to prog in it´s various forms. And I still occasionally find new albums that get me excited. And all of this is mainly thanks to this site.
I like my eggs boiled and that´s it!

I just kind of assumed the topic was addressing a phenomenon, or something. Though it is true that many consider prog more sophisticated, so maybe they're suggesting a level of maturity for younger people who appreciate it? *shrug*

I'm afraid you need to climb off that high horse and realise prog is just music. It doesn't make you a superior human being, or more knowledgeable than the average person, or know more about music. It's just a genre of music you like.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but attitudes like that is why the more mainstream audiences think we're snobs, because evidently, some of us are. Don't worry, you'll grow out of it.

I don't know, it does show a level of sophistication, to be fair. If you like prog, you probably value skill and composition, and have a stronger, longer attention span. Note "probably".

This doesn't make you a superior being, or something, but objectively, artistically, this means you likely value creativity. There are those who like music, and those who like creativity, and those who like both. None of those people are bad people.

If you seriously are musically sophisticated and all that, you go classical.

Prog rock is still rock'n'roll

I just don't know why you didn't get that I was exaggerating about it (emoticon thing, you know).when you said "Don't worry, you'll grow out of it." I was expecting a guy above 40, but ... .
