There is a character called Schemajah Hillel but I didn't he was based on anyone or was even real.

Yes, it is Hillel. Rabbi Hillel is a famous Jewiish Rabbi from around the time of the birth of Christ, and he appears in the novel of Meyrink too.

I think James deserves this one though; he did most of the work and was so close.

Unfortunately the Wikipedia entry does not point out Hillel is a rabbi,. But he is called so several times in the novel.

All three are definitely worth reading. If you want to read "The Golem" in English, get the translation by Mitchell and not the one by Pemberton.
