Yes, she is indeed European.

To make it easier for those who don't know which country, I'll give another clue but this time about the city she was born in.

The city she was born in was at the time mostly a German speaking one and was a Free City at the time (actually between 1920 and 1939).

She was not.

I'll try and give a clue that doesn't make things that obvious.

She didn't become well know until 2005.

Looks like the highest point in Poland is a few metres more than 2500 metres, but still: Was she Polish?

Said Free City is Danzig/Gdansk, amirite. So it is Poland.

No idea, tho, about the person. I just browsed a list of personalities from that city, but can't think of somebody in particular.

Is it Angela Merkel's mother?

It is indeed Gdansk she was born.

No, it was not Angela Merkel's mother.

I read it somewhere else but they may have got their date from Wikipedia.

You’re right. The peak I thought was the highest is actually in Slovakia. Embarrassed

No, that question was stupid. Is the person mentioned in a book by Maria Bogucka?

She's a real person, not fictional.

There was a BBC programme about her life in 2009 (although I haven't seen it).

A bit of a weird clue that even confuses me a bit:

She was Jewish but she's also listed as an Atheist on Wikipedia.

Oh right, many apologies.  I don't know the book in question, so cannot say.  I shall go and check.
