no, he was not British.

I mentioned Garozzo once. he still plays at BBO, though he is way in his 80s. people call him "Papi" there

Hmm, I was sure it was Belladonna … but maybe it was Friede who made that post.

Did he come from a Mediterranean country?

Did he play in any movies?

(Btw, you were right about Garozzo. I was the one who mentioned Belladonna in my answer.)

yes, he was older than 75 when he died. and he directed two movies (and took the male lead in them) but that's by far  not all

Wild stab in the dark: Paul Verhoeven?

Oh, he was 74 when he died.  Can't be him.

Was he also a musician?

Verhoeven was Dutch anyway, and he made a lot more than just two movies. and no, a musician he was not

there were many books published under his name, andtheir content was entirely by him.  there was writing in them too. but I would not say he "wrote" these books; that would be misleading. the number of words per page was mostly no more than a few

he started out as a cartoonist, but this is not what he was most famous for. though even as a cartoonist he was very famous already. but his major fame is from something else

Hans Richter?

I know he made and starred in some of his own silent films (I've seen one of them and his wife is in it too).  Wiki says he was a painter and graphic artist too.  No idea about his books though if he made any.

no, not Hans Richter. the man I am looking for could impersonate other people to a T; one of his most famous impersonationsis is of zoologist Bernhard Grzimek (who won an Oscar for "best documentary" in1960 for a movie about the Serengeti and had a regular program about animals on German TV). when Grizmek saw this impersonation he believed it was himself

Ah, that helps.  I'll probably be back with a name shortly, unless someone steals my thunder!
