Truthfully, I have not looked at the Archives to see if there was a list like this available.  So, please forgive me if there already is.
 
I would just to see just what people's idea of "classic" is.  For my money, a classic, essential disc must have a combination of melody, atmosphere, great songs, perfect production and flawless playing.
 
I present my list of classic prog and non-prog records (in no particular order, mind)
 
 
1/Rush: Moving Pictures
2/Yes: 90125
3/King Crimson: In The Court Of The Crimson King
4/Anna Nalick: Wreck Of The Day
5/Maroon5: Songs About Jane
6/Genesis: Foxtrot
7/Black Sabbath: Paranoid
8/Opeth: Damnation
9/Metallica: Master Of Puppets
10/Prince: Purple Rain
11/Michael Jackson: Thriller
12/Guns 'N Roses: Appetite For Destruction
13/Fleetwood Mac: Rumours
14/Dream Theater: Images & Words
15/Queensryche: Empire

Half of your list is nowhere near classic in my book. Such lists are pointless.

My list is based on MY impressions of such discs, whether it be prog or NON-prog.  So this list does have worth.

^To you, but hardly anyone else. There's a top 100 prog albums based on average ratings and there's a list on RYM as well. I personally don't care for those or any lists at all.

Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...
