I'm sure many of you have had the same problem, given our musical tastes. I'm able to pick up quite a few CD's from second hand stores, sometimes on eBay, but for most of what I listen to, CD's elude me.
I much prefer CD's over digital downloading for the artwork etc. Is there a place where most of the obscure stuff can be found? For now I just keep a big list of stuff I want and when I'm browsing the second hand store racks, if I see one I grab it. That's not all bad, mind you, since I can get them super cheap. I fear a lot of second hand stores don't buy them from folks because they are so obscure and they feel they can't resell them. I dunno, what do you all do? If it's something that's still in print you could probably order it through any decent record store (for a standard price). If not, I suppose you'll just have to browse through various online record stores and auction sites like ebay. |

For second hand stuff you should check out half.com. They also have independent sellers of new stuff. They are a division of e-bay but you don't have to deal with bidding. Amazon is probably my main source these days. There are a lot of independent stores selling stuff under them and individuals. Above all I'd recommend specialist retailers as mentioned above or going directly to the artist or whoever they give you a link to. I have bought plenty of stuff from individual sellers of their own used stuff (primarily through half.com) and never been screwed over.
One of the cooler things I ordered was a used CD of Rick Wakeman's 1984 (I really don't care for the music now that I've heard it). It took forever to arrive and I was about to report it. It arrived from Russia with lots of cool stamps and wrapped in used typing paper that had Cyrillic typing on it. I think the disc was either a bootleg or was issued especially for Soviet Union distribution. Edited by Slartibartfast - December 28 2011 at 19:41 |

I have the same problem. It really sucks but I pretty much just buy what I can find. Most the time I can only find about half of the bands that I hear are good. Two recent bands that I can think of that I couldn't find are Anubis and Introitus. Anyway, I mainly use Amazon.com and band's websites if they have one.

I just bought Anubis A Tower of Silence from their bandcamp page (http://birdsrobe.bandcamp.com/album/a-tower-of-silence). I believe Synphonic has it as well. |

You need to find a site like www.buyvinyls.com A site like this one gives you rare out of print and/or obscure material and this one is an afiliate of eBay.
I know its for vinyl but I have to think many exist for CD's.

Wayside has an incredible range but can feel unduly expensive. eBay can occasionally surprise... =)

Well sure, but who has time to go through their enormous prog section? Seriously though, I've found Amazon to be the most convenient. The 3rd Party sellers are mostly all very reliable, because if they aren't, the word gets out fast and they won't get any business. If I'm looking for something more difficult to find in the US, say an archival Magma concert release, I'll usually go to Wayside. I truly miss the days of good record and CD stores. There's still a few left here, but even they seem to be slimming down their inventory. On the other hand, in the old days I could never find so many people who shared my musical interests in one place, and learn from their listening experiences, so the tradeoff's not too bad. |
