And you mean "Krautrock is my daily life", don't you? Faust is my first Kraut band and have been immersed in (now and forever). |

Hey there guys!
I hope you got through the new year´s party with every extremity in place, and with a thirst for more crazy and out there Krautrock to take you far far away. I´ve been listening to DOM´s Edge of Time recently, and while much of that record is pure chill out acoustic guitar heaven with muffled hand drums and the works - a piece like Flötenmenschen truly sounds like an experiment undertaken after a dinner of several Mexican cacti. PHEEWII - goes as far out as I personally care to venture in music, and damn what a trip it is!! This is the opening cut of the album called Introitus. Does anybody out there have this album - and have heard Flötenmenschen(The whistle man)? It sadly isn´t uploaded on YouTube.... |

^ Love that album David. It's about an acid trip apparently and like you said it's a pretty chilled out record. It's interesting that the members are from various countries like Poland,Hungary and Germany.I listened to this not that long ago but should spin it tonight. And yes the bonus tracks are great !

I just gave it a spin yesterday and it is a real humdinger. I think I´m getting more used to musical freak outs that goes beyond comprehension - some of this stuff is just crazy
I´m guessing these bands were no strangers to acid back then... CAN and Gila sure sounds like they did some experimentation of their own too. |

Thanks for the intro to DOM. It rings a bell but I'd never gotten to it before. Kraut is among my very favorite genres so I'm glad I came across this.

^Wow Pierre - that is some serious stuff! Thank you for posting that. To me that truly sounds like Krautrock done with a symphony orchestra.
I read that this was for the victims of Hiroshima, and somehow this track manages to en capture everything about it. It´s eerie, frightening and has a way of crawling up on you like some ninja killer, but then again it´s also quite beautiful. Reminds me of Jimi Hendrix´ Machine Gun, where he summed up everything about the Vietnam war inside a guitar solo - even if that kind of music is miles away from this one. I hope you know what I mean. |

I see what you mean. This music is scored with 52 strings. No more No less.

I see - anyway, 52 should do the trick. The highest number of string instruments I´ve seen at a concert is probably 10 or 15
Never been to a classical concert in my life, but someday I ´m going. Just to feel the power of the music. My dad used to work at the Danish Royal Theatre, and he tells me I should go too. |

You miss something. An advice. For your first time, you need to buy an expensive ticket close to the orchestra. It is essential for someone coming from the world of rock or jazz. If you don't, you will find the sound very thin.
Take care. It's a contagious music. RPI cured me from it this year. But one day or another I will fall again sick

You may say that your English isn´t very good my little duckling, - but man I really think you have a way with words Pierre.
I will remember that - thanks for the advice, it´s much appreciated. |

Hi, David-Bamsen.
You've recommended me one of the most bizarre Kraut projects eh? (I've been pretty immersed in their album "Stürmischer Himmel" ... thanks a lot! ) |

You can read about CAN's experimentations on their website, including how Holger looks at a lot of the stuff they put together. You did not need drugs to do what they did ... which was very different than the California idea, or even the Guru Guru concept.
But if I compare Can to Popol Vuh, I will find that Can is more "academic" and "defined" than Popol Vuh, but still sounds wide open in Tago Mago and Ege Bamyasi which they no longer have that freedom of expression in Future Days or Soon Over Babbalooma, when the "compositional side meets the experiential side really well ... and if you look at thos transitions in Bel Air and then in the side 2 of the Soon Over Babbalooma (the 2 long cuts running together) ... you will find it very pretty and ... sometimes impossible to compose ... because it would take too long and on paper it would look too repetitive to be attractive. Mind you, that 3 members of Can came from a gigantic music school that is almost solely responsible by itself with what we're calling "krautrock". But I'm not sure that we're giving these people credit for a little studying because we love our Sex Pimples and Pistols!
Gila, and I have to hear it again, is more from the Popol Vuh school than anything else ... and at the start it is out right in the open and I think that it was more defined by the sound and feel of the moment than it was by "music" or any compositional idea.

Hi,
From my point of view, there are 3 quite clear designs, or "schools" that define "krautrock" ... although one could sit here and define more ... and sub even more ... and I'm not even considering or including the jazz side because it was not small either.
Free Form Rock -- with the emphasiz on still having a rock context. Great example was Guru Guru. There are some interviews out there, and even Helmut Hattler say that they were stoned many times and on occasion they would look at each other and go ... now what ... and Mani or someone else would say ... do something ... I like that because it is one of the places where most musicians do not "live", "understand" or want to learn from. You can not become a Hendrix, or a SRVaughn or one of those folks that flows away ... until you feel "free" of form and you learn to play with, or against anything. Early Amon Duul (the original) and the first 2 albums by AD2, fit here. AshRaTempel in the earlier days before they went to Virgin. Cosmic Couriers.
Academic Form Rock -- I would like to put in this group the folks that came out of the Berlin School and many others. Again, CAN fits here a lot better than they do the free from stuff, although it looks like in their very early days that they fit the Free Form Rock very well, but not later and certainly not after Tago Mago. Novalis fits here, as do most and any.
The who cares Electronic Front -- Both Klaus Schulze and TD fit here, but then, so does Faust and the unreal number of solo keyboard artists that appeared quickly in the German scene. There was a side of it, that was about the "trip" a lot more than it was about anything else. I never thought, or accepted that Tangerine Dream, or Cyborg, or Zeit were about drugs, and they never needed to be ... and like Neu, Kraftwerk and Faust, they were experimenting and learning the knobs and how to make music with it ... and this reminds me of the earlier works by Beaver and Krause in America and later the likes of Tomita and even Walter/Wendy Carlos. Many of these folks were not exactly musical tramps and were very well versed and studied ... so the likelyhood is not that they were doing their pimples/pistols impressions but making a serious effort to create something new. And both TD and Schulze have shown this by their endurance and unreal quantity of work.
Now comes a problem ... the more you go with one of these three styles (if you will) the less they become "krautrock" and the more they become something else ... which we have no label for! But we hurt the definition, when we look at TD and KS today doing work with orchestras ... and you and I sitting here and all we can say is ... that's krautrock?
The jazz side ... I have no idea and have to go back to the start to even be able to know how to write about it ... I have 2 Between albums and I don't even remember them ... and they are vastly different from the Peter Michael Hamel meditation stuff that he had ... which is nothing lke the other stuff he also did, or wrote about!
Yeah ... that was a part of it all. But is it rock? ... is it jazz? ... or just music? Edited by moshkito - January 10 2012 at 14:08 |

Hi,
I'm going to post exactly the same thing I've written on this site probably 10 times, in the assumption ... that more than 0 people care this time! (Sorry, that was rude) |
