No prizes for guessing how I voted.

Read the books and you might feel differently. Dinner with Moomins would be every bit as warm, friendly and convivial as it would be with Hobbits.

The Moomins used to freak me out too, but my perception was based solely on the poorly animated Japanese TV series. I think it's fair to say that watching a Japanese adaptation of Finnish stories dubbed by American voice actors probably isn't the greatest way to experience Jannson's unique vision. When I finally read one of the books (Moominland Midwinter - perfect introduction, and now is the perfect time to be reading it!) I was astounded at how much I'd misunderstood the whole atmosphere of Jannson's world as a child.

^Exactly! Have you read Det osynliga barnet ("Tales from Moomin Valley")? There’s a fantastic Christmas story there where the Moomins (who hibernate in the wintertime) are woken up on Christmas Eve, and they think Christmas is a kind of monster who wants food, gifts and even a decorated tree.

Judging by your user name, you’ve been eating with the Moomins quite a few times. And you used to have a complete collection of stamps.

I was going to say that I didn't know Moomins, but I recognize them now from an animation series on TV. Which I don't like at all, but then again, I never read the original books.

From the knowledge that I have right now, I choose definitely for the Hobbits. They seem like good company, and they appreciate the good life. They may cook 6 meals a day for me.

I'm assuming everyone voting hobbit hasn't read Tove's Moomin books, because if you had, there's no way you'd pick hobbits.

The animated series of Moomins used to be ok to watch with children, but the books are as much existentialist philosophy as are i.e. Kierkegaard, Sartre and Heidegger. They are not children's books at all, although they are written so that even kids fancy them.

The old Moomin comics from the 60's are weird. These lovely trolls take LSD among other things...

I've never read Tolkien. My daughter once forced me to watch the first of the LotR movies, and it was by far the worst movie I have ever seen. The books can't be that bad.

Considering how hobbits feel about eating and their meals, I would expect a large meal if I ate at a hobbit's house.

Moomins. Great stuff, warm-hearted and funny. And wise.

Edit: Oops, I just realized I didn't precisely answer the poll question, so:

Dinner at the Moomin's house. (And I'm pretty sure none of them would mind whatever leaf you smoked afterwards...)
