for krautrock vibes its really just largely Millions, and maybe the latest Beacons of Ancestorship. although The Wire did compare TNT to Can's Future Days (and i can hear where they're coming from). Standards and It's All Around You are much more fusion-style, whilst the first s/t is more like a post-punk dub reggae album. another more kraut work from Tortoise is the Gamera/Cliff Dweller Society 12inch EP, which can also be found on the A Lazarus Taxon boxset.......whew!! |

theres also lotta krautrock influence in other modern bands like Radiohead and Wilco.
Lotsa Can in Radiohead songs, like Planet Telex (Thom Yorke said its influenced by Tago Mago), There There, Dollars and Cents, much of Kid A etc. For Wilco check out the A Ghost Is Born album and the new The Whole Love.......... |

If we´re talking influences here, then Beck (I´m a loser) stated how much he learned from listening to Amon Düül ll.
Also new electronic artist f**k Buttons incorporate kraut into their bouncy soundscapes - especially on their most recent Tarot Sports - even if you can dance to it |

Hi can anyone help me identify this piece of Krautrock electronic music
from the 1970s. I heard it in my childhood on the television during
some scientific documentary, either on BBC or ITV. The music reminded
me of Edgar Frose, Klaus Shulze in the Virgin Tangerine Dream era. It
might be even Cluster, Eno or Vangelis but not the guitar dominated
stuff more just synths. I have been unable to locate this since so had
to hum into a crappy Skype microphone and up it on Youtube to see if
anyone could recognise it.

Damn it!!! ARRHGG - just on the tip of my tongue!!
That is something I´ve heard before, no doubt in my mind - but the tricky thing is remembering the name and artist... My brain is like a piece of melted cheese these days, so I guess I have to come back, whenever it pulls itself together. |

I, on the other hand, am a fan of pretty much all Tortoise, but I have very little Krautrock. TNT is my favorite, with "millions" being fairly close behind. Here's the extent of my Krautrock collection: Agitation Free Malesch Amon Düül II Yeti Can Tago Mago That's it. I don't know that I love any of them. Probably Yeti is my favorite of them, with Tago Mago being at the bottom. Nonetheless I would be interested in further exploration. With this very vague glance into my preferences, any Krautrock recommendations? |

^Hi there Infocat.
Krautrock is a pretty big umbrella term that mostly describes the attitude of the music, and giving recs inside it is somewhat difficult, as there is so much variety and different styles, but I´d happily give you some though First of all, no Krautrock collection should be without NEU!´s debut album. It is so simple on first listen, but don´t let that fool you as it, maybe just like it did to me, -will grow on you and reveal so much of its facets on closer inspection: NEU! and NEU! Popol Vuh. This is there Hosianna Mantra, which is very much a collection of evolved hippie music - yogi ponderings conveyed through some beautiful music: Popol Vuh Nosferatu. Krautrock meets Canterbury and hard rock: Nosferatu Kraan. Although listed here under fusion, there first album clearly is in the vein of this highly eclectic branch of music: Kraan Faust. Out there in the hedges kind of music, and my guess is, that if you don´t like CAN, then these guys probably won´t do it for you either. That taken into account, this (called IV) is there most "accessible" album I have from them, and this track has become somewhat of an anthem: Faust Let me know what you think of these, and then maybe I´ll be able to help you more properly, and direct you towards some artists that occupy some of the same musical areas |

I'll link some from each of those groups, maybe not the most representative, but some personal favorites (except Nosferatu, in which case I just chose a track at random since I don't own the album):
Neu! Popol Vuh: Nosferatu: (I'm also not familiar with these guys yet) Kraan (can't find anything from my favorite album, their 1975 live album, so here's a vid from the same year anyway) Faust Also, I might suggest Yatha Sidhra's A Meditation Mass...very laid back album, with some jazziness here and there: |

Nice one salty! Those were in fact the tracks I tried linking, except I also posted Weissensee from NEU!, and my fave from Kraan is without a doubt the debut. But thanks man!
You should check out that Nosferatu one. Great mix of Canterbury and Kraut - somewhat similar to Khan with a hefty dose of psych. |

How does Atem compare with Zeit? I have Zeit and am quite fond of it. I listened to the Neu! song posted above yesterday and found it pretty good. Listening to the Popul Vuh right now. Mellow; nice.

No krautrock collection is complete without something from Mannheim band Dzyan. Their four releases are all great-Dzyan, Time Machine, Electric Silence, and Mandala. The first album is more jazz rock, really, but they get more experimental as you progress-bonkers, but brilliant! |

Zeit is definitely more of an ambient work than Atem, which still has some drums and rumbly bubbly noises hahaha. Zeit is more of a 'kosmische' record than the 'kraut' Atem if i am makin any sense.... |
