Topic: Great non-prog prog albums you love? Posted: November 25 2004 at 09:47 |
Most proggers are very into music in general, and since X-mas is arriving, how about recommending some extremely superb albums with "advanced/progressive/non-pop" music for anyone to have under the tree this year:
My hard earned cash would support these albums:
* FSOL (the Future Sound of London) - Dead Cities (dark, progressive, electronica)
* Keith Jarret - The Köln Concert (One man, one piano, wonderful harmonies and melodies, greatest improvisation ever recoded?)
* Bendik Hofseth - Plantes, space and .... IKEA (What happens if you mix jazz and classical into pop song structures? You'll get great intellectual lyrics, enormous diversity, though the bad english accent does annoy me to some degree.
* Pat Metheny - Imaginary Day (Pat goes fusion/prog rock with amazing result! 48 string guitars, heavy metal riffs and acoustic songs made in heaven...?)
* Jeff Buckley - Grace (If you haven't heard it, you've missed the greatest voice of our generation...!)

I would heartily recommend "Escape" by the Norwegian metal band Ram-Zet for anyone wanting a walk on the wild and weird side. And their first album "Pure Therapy" isn't bad either. Metal isn't really my thing but when it's done with as much intelligence and creativity as here it can be a treat.

Absolutely
Love: Forever Changes.
Dave Brubeck Quartet At Carnegie Hall . Several arrangements here on this 1964 recording which would and could inspire budding prog rockers - Rondo A La Turk obviously inspired The Nice, while I personally know a number of good amateur and pro drummers who tried to keep up with Joe Morello's unusual and always deliberately varied time signatures.
Savoy Brown: Raw Sienna. To me the The British blues boom recording of the late 60's/early seventies - Chris Youlden's vocals IMHO better than any others of the period.

"Pipedream" by Alan Hull, stunning solo album by the late Lindisfarne man.
"Year of the cat" by Al Stewart, criminally underrated singer songwriter, who can at times venture into prog territory.
"Boston" by Boston. A great power rock album.
"Rainbow rising" by Rainbow. Blackmore at his best
"Fireball" by Deep Purple. probably their most complete album
""Scavenger" by The Walkabouts. Why are this band not huge? Great female vocals, and stunning guitar work. You must hear the last track, "train to mercy".
"Cosmo's factory" by Creedence Clearwater Revival. An embarrasment on riches on one album.
"Catch bull at four" by Cat Stevens. If only he could have made more like this.
"Wrecking ball" by Emmylou Harris. Her perfect voice ventures away from country to wonderful new areas.

"Made in Japan" by Deep Purple

"Bags Groove" by Miles Davis
"On Parole" by Motorhead
"Master of Puppets" by Metallica
Rachmaninov's Cello Concerto.
...and everything else I've forgotten

but:

Are You Experienced-Jimi Hendrix
IV-Led Zep
Rising-Rainbow
Machine Head-Deep Purple
Vapor Trails-Rush (sic)
Kind Of Blue-Miles Davis
Wardances-Colosseum II

Fun to see a few Al Steward recs :D
Looks like Love is in the air too, so I'll have to chek 'em out.
Lots of great music here, though I was not asking for pop records, just prog that usually doesn't fit under the "prog rock" label.

I'm a big Al Stewart fan myself and I think "Time Passages" and "24 Carrots" are his best. "Last Days Of The Century" is a very strange choice,Richardh.
