Whose idea was it to put 75 % of all this planet's computer hard drive manufacturing on a floodplain ?

The prices for hard drives has doubled during the last 6 months due to the floods in Thailand. Maddening and very damaging to the world's economics. The next crisis and probably on the top of the Euro crisis, is going to be the shortage of hard wares for the billions of computers. Everything from computers in governments who are crunching over these Euro numbers to the hard drives in the private sectors. Cloud drives ? The faraway servers need hard drives too..... 

In short; the lack of hard drives is probably going to give the world economics a new bout of influensa again and that during the second quarter of next year. Btw I am dead serious and not joking. Angry

We knew this was going to happen. I can recall predictions of it at least 3 or so months ago. It's still unfortunate. I really hope my external doesn't crash.

That's interesting.  If you had quizzed me on what country makes 75% of all hard drives, I would have guessed China.  Oddly enough I do have a few hard drives in my possession that aren't in functional computers.  I also live in a floodplain.

By the way, Torodd, I guess you're old enough to remember when a one gigabyte hard drive was considered huge.

It is kind of scary to think of the impact something like that can have on the world economy.

Scary ? The Euro crisis is scary enough. But the shortage of hard drives is scary on a new level again. Now, I am scared. Really scared. This is going to be one heck of an influensa for the world economy.   

On a more personal note. I picked up some pata hard drive enclosures on my way home tonight and have put some old pata discs in them. One of them are a 80 GB disc from 2002. It still works perfectly well. I am now formatting altogether 1.5 TB of pata discs for use as backups at home for my music collection.

1 TB cloud drive subscription costs from $ 1000 a year and upwards. Not an option for me or most private users.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around the terabyte capacity.  Some days the information makes you feel really old.  I'm not giving up though until I die.

Btw my first computer had a 175 MB big hard drive, 4 MB ram and ran on Windows 3.0. It cost me in todays money $ 3000 (three thousand dollars).

My flashdrive now is 8 GB big. My camera has a 8 GB big SD card. My old MP3 player has 256 MB built in and a 16 GB SDx card. Yes, I am old and very grumpy.

My first computer was a commodore 64.  My first PC was a 286 and ran on a system of hammers, chisels and clay tablets.

The company I worked at many years ago had Apple III's for word processing and I got to take one home when they upgraded.  Ah the good old days when floppies were floppy.  And we liked it!

There was a vent in today's paper: "I'm clearing out all my old computer stuff.  Floppy disks are useless now, but I think I can market them as table leg shims to restaurants."

I had one of these black beauties...ah chiclet keys. I did alot of BASIC programming on that silly little thing before we got a Commodore 64. I was in heaven. Rich kids had Apple II. Really rich kids had IBMs.

At the same firm before the drafting department got its first Windows 3.1 we were doing pretty well without any mouse.  We had digitizer tablets.  I was reluctant at first to use a mouse because I had become so used to doing CAD with the digitizer.  Wiki's a little off on how digitizer were typically used for CAD drafting.  You'd rarely use them for tracing.  The tablet would be set up with a screen area and set of virtual buttons to activate drafting commands.

We may actually have a thread languishing out there where us old farts can reminisce about the earlier days of computing.
