Yes, in the sense that he became famous by practising a kind of art.
He was professor in semiotics at the university of Bologna until 2008.

All the hidden hints are clues although the first ones were very cryptic. The word "Salesmen" is appropriate here, but in another sense than usual. I think it is hard to find the person by this hint, it is a detail taken from his bio on Wikipedia.
I'll explain these hints afterwards .
He received the German order Pour le Mérite (Civil class).

^Yes, he stated two pages ago that it’s a real living person.
OK, "Flash" must be another clue. Is he a photographer?

No. I understand the suggestion; I should have done better by writing "Flash is in the flame".

He is from a more recent time; still alive and less than five hundred years old, to be more precisely . But he knows a thing or two about medieval issues and he has even written about them.

Yes.
One of the previous hints concerns his current age.

Yes, at least he did until 2008.

No. He did write popular novels indeed, but none dates from the 70's.
I think the target should be within reach now.
His first novel was released in 1980.

Yes. Well done !
I'll explain the 'invisible ink'-hints right now:
- Trained by Salesmen: Not to be taken literally: Eco was educated by Salesians.
- A gift from the heavens: Latin: Ex Caelis Oblatus, the acronym 'Eco' was given as a surname to his grandfather, who was a foundling.
- Foot of the Mountain: The translation of Piedmont, the region where Umberto Eco comes from.
- 22nd prime: The 22nd prime number is 79, his current age.
The next six hints refer to his novels in order of release date:
- Stat Roma pristina nomine, nomina nuda tenemus: The last words of The Name of the Rose ('Roma' was 'rosa', but this alternative makes more sense).
- A pendulum swings: Refers to his novel Foucault's Pendulum.
- Marooned: Refers to the content of The Island of the Day Before.
- Crusade #4: The story of Baudolino is placed in the time of the Fourth Crusade.
- Flash: Flash Gordon figures in The Mysterious Flame of Queen Loana.
- There are 12000 tombstones in Josefov: Josefov is the Jewish quarter of the city of Prague, in which The Prague Cemetery lies.
The hints hereafter need no further explanation.

WOW! I didn’t see the "invisible" messages until now. I think the "pendulum" clue would have been enough to guess the right person. And the "salesman" clue could also refer to semiotics: Semioticians study, among other things, the noble art of advertising.
I’ve read Foucault’s Pendulum (very good) and Baudolino (clever, but less interesting imo).

This one is probably very hard:
Real person, female, still alive.
And before you start: You may never have heard about her, but at least she has her own Wiki article, so it’s far from impossible to find the answer.
