Sorry, didn’t see it. No, not a Biblical character. |

Does she also appear in Greek literature or mythology (i.e. Homer's epics, tragedies a.o.)?
(I don't know yet, maybe just stamppot. My wife and I are not inclined to make much fuss of Christmas) Edited by someone_else - November 29 2011 at 07:53 |

I think she did, though it’s not like she invented anything useful. |

Tricky question. Homer is definitely no. I think Plato refers to her, but I’m not sure. She was very well known in ancient Greece. And she’s not a character in a tragedy. |

I checked a little – it’s a bit unclear if Plato referred to her, but he probably did. It’s also said that he called her "wise". |

Sappho is right!
Come back again, I beg you, Gongyla reveal yourself in your chiton white as milk; o what desire flutters round you, my lovely girl. This charming garment stirs her who beholds you, for she who expresses this reproach to you is the goddess herself born-in-Cyprus, whom now I invoke. The goddess is of course Aphrodite. And the poem sounds much better in Greek. Manos Hatzidakis put music to it, and you can find it on the fabulous album Ο Μεγάλος Ερωτικός (Magnus Eroticus). @Ian:
Anactoria would have been very difficult, since she was one of Sappho’s lovers, mentioned in one of her poems. And to those of you who don’t know Sappho: She was the most famous and influential female poet in ancient Greece. She is known for her passionate lesbian poems – in fact, the word "lesbian" was made because she came from the Island Lesvos. |

Trained by salesmen? Hmm …
Since you didn’t mention the gender: Does this person have a gender? |
