Not Otherwise Specified is a one man project by Craig Kerley (who as a matter of fact sang vocals on a track on my There's No Way Out album), helives in Atlanta.

His debut album was released just today and is available for streaming/buying on his Reverbnation page:


I had the chance to listen to it a little ahead of the release date and I must say it's a HELL on an album, definetly a
contender for album of the year for me.

Sorry for not getting back, so far most of us have seen the prog rock merit in the music but it is unsure which sub it would be best suited for. At this moment the neo-prog team is looking into it.

Hmmm, quite a lot...and yet at the same time absolutely nothing! Seems to me that neither Prog Metal or Neo want him, and at the moment he is right back where he started, without actually being in anyone's chart any more, so where next?
 
Well, let me start by saying that I have been listening to prog in all its various forms for a little over 40 years now, though I have always done so purely as someone who loves music from almost any genre or sub genre that isn't syrupy pop, tuneless rap, or the modern trance-inducing, mind-numbing jungle music that all the kids today seem to enjoy bopping about to at their parties, discos etc. I have never been one to analyse or attempt to categorise my music in any way...until I found these forums quite recently, that is. Consequently I have nowhere near the experience that the rest of you guys have at being able to spot what is 'Post/Math Rock', 'RIO/Avant-Prog', 'Indo-Prog/Raga Rock', and all the other weird and wonderful names that mankind has come up with over the years for this wonderful gift God gave us called 'music'. However, when I listen to this album, and then read the definition of 'Heavy Prog' as written on the page devoted to it here in progarchives, I'm left thinking "what's the problem here"?
 
The progarchives definition of Heavy Prog is pretty concise, so I'm going to paste the whole thing right here:
 
"Heavy Prog defines progressive rock music that draws as much influence from hard rock as it does from classic progressive rock. In simple terms, it is a marriage of the guitar-based heavy blues of the late 1960s and 1970s - artists such as Cream, Led Zeppelin, and Black Sabbath - and the progressive/symphonic movement represented by King Crimson, Yes and Genesis.

The electric guitar, amplified to produce distortion (or 'overdrive') is a crucial element, providing the 'heavy' tone required for this aggressive style, and later for the British and North American heavy metal of the late 1970s and 80s. The primary rock format of drums, bass and guitar with keys and/or vocals on top is represented strongly in heavy prog. The presence of the Hammond organ with its deep, intense rumble was also common among harder progressive groups such as ATOMIC ROOSTER. Although certain other acts, such as King Crimson and Jethro Tull, utilize a heavy guitar, bass and keyboard sound, the bulk of their work over the years puts them in a different category".

Don't we have all of those things fairly abundantly represented pretty-well throughout this album (admittedly alongside alongside a few passages here and there that are perhaps a bit closer to neo prog, which is probably my favourite sub genre of them all)? It certainly isn't Prog Metal from my own understanding of what that sub genre is all about (which is probably totally wrong, but such is life!). I guess the only way we're going to really find out is to listen to the album, and since Craig has hitherto been extremely generous in the way he has provided free access to his music for anybody who is actually prepared to sit down and listen to it, I don't think he will object if I post the whole thing right here, right now - using the videos that HE himself uploaded to YouTube...

So there you have it - and if you don't listen to anything else on this page, just try and spend 9 minutes of your time on the sixth video down this list...It's called "Morning", and it's an absolute belter! To someone like me who primarily listens to music in general (and prog in particular) simply because of the sheer enjoyment he gets from it, this album is probably one of the best of the year so far. It should have been on progarchives a long long time ago.
 
Let's fix that now...

That was my final analysis as well so you're probably not too far off with your understanding, that or either I am as well Tongue

It looks like there is a bit more material now to eval, why not 'Heavy Neo Prog' then Wacko

The band that Olav has highlighted in the last but one post is the Dutch power trio S.O.T.E. (Songs Of The Exile), who have been around since 1993, and made 5 releases so far - the latest being the 2008 album "Reasons". Their music is all over the map really, so I can understand why this has proved to be such a tough cookie to crack!  LOL

^^ There is probably more genuine Prog Metal on their latest album "Reasons" than the other three full albums they released (the self-titled 1993 release was really just a 5-track demo) - but even here they seem to drift into Neo Prog territory (and other sub genres too, which I daren't even attempt to identify...) pretty well whenever they feel like it. The only albums I have in full are "Reasons" itself and the 2003 album "Time To End". There are some short samples from the other albums on YouTube:  see http://www.youtube.com/user/gertonleijdekker, some live clips too, and one full track (called simply "I") uploaded by someone else from the 1995 album "And About Time": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xOJ9yAcbkeQ. I don't know what material you already have, (the last two albums can be streamed up to 3 times each on Mindawn.com if you are registered there), but if you need these 2 albums to listen offline to help you with your evaluation, I will gladly p.m. you with the necessary info.
 
This band definitely belong on here, and the only two alternatives from my own point of view would be either Prog Metal or Heavy Prog - & there are probably equal amounts of each in their repertoire. The Neo Prog they touch on from time to time is only a secondary aspect of their music as far as I'm concerned, particularly in their later stuff.
