You ought to read the bits and pieces by Patti Smith on her book about Jimi ... it's quite inspirational ... though I don't think that too many people enjoy checking those things out. Too much reading!

You're probably right, Moshkito. I felt that Jimi's fate was somehow inevitable, once his career took off so rapidly. There are so many similar instances, like Keith Moon, Kurt Cobain, Brian Jones etc. all of whom found fame difficult, if not impossible too handle.

Just an observation really: Ain't it hideously ironic that Hendrix had to be imported back into the US from the UK before he was afforded the status of the personification of 'American musical visionary' the rest of the planet had to subsequently catch up with?

Yeah ... and sad.
But then, how many of us had to leave home to make our own living and art?
It's a very tough life of not being accepted and understood, and writing, painting and music are no different in this aspect, but in the end, the ones that "make" it are the ones that didn't quit on themselves. But Jimi had to develop "All Along the Watchtower" in order to get everyone going ... and then some.
All too often, the most bizarre and off the way things, are the best and most important, and least understood.
And you and I know how much "progressive" music has been wasted because of the same feeling and problem. And this is the reason why I don't like to use the words in reviews that suggest that one thing is better than the other, or such.
