And if it is indeed possible to be Tetrachromatic, then I presume the new colours you'd be able to see would just be further shades of the primary colours and not actually any new primary colours?

They'd be new. Shades of visible colors are visible colors. |

One study suggested that 2–3% of the world's women might have the kind
of fourth cone that lies between the standard red and green cones,
giving, theoretically, a significant increase in color differentiation.[13]

The frequency at which this pregnant girl is whining is so irritating.

What I meant was, they'd all be a slightly different shade of an existing colour, such as purple. Would it though be possible for a brand new colour, not like any currently existing colour, to exist? much like Pratchet mentions in the Discworld series (cannot remember what the colour is called!).

There would be entirely new colors with their own different shades previously unheard of.

Is this why women always think they're right when they decorating the house in some awful colour that I think is a shade of green but they think is a shade of blue? |

I assume they are "new" colors but isn't it just perceiving different parts of the spectrum? |

Well of course it is. The colours always exist but our 3 colour receptors only allow us to see a certain amount of them (which is plenty).
They'd be new colours to us though. Edited by James - November 03 2011 at 20:51 |

New in the same way someone who's been blind from birth would think red, blue and green are new colors I guess. |
