Dead Alive (aka Braindead, the original NZ title):  WOW!  Never in my life have I seen such a hilarious gorefest.  Watching the movie had me laughing my head off, seeing all the crap Lionel had to deal with and just how GORY it all was.  If I haven't made it clear...this movie has LOTS OF BLOOD AND GORE.  Definitely stay away if you're even slightly squeamish...otherwise, watch, laugh, and be amazed at Peter Jackson's (yes, the Lord of the Rings guy) earlier work.

Nuremberg with Alec Baldwin (5 stars) there is nary a trite or misplaced part in this movie, and holds your interest every step of the way-acting and characterization is very good
           hard hitting but also moving

Tonight, I watched two:
1. Drag Me to Hell - a fun, if not absolutely stunning movie from Sam Raimi...I guess I was trying to compare it too much with the Evil Dead trilogy, because it didn't quite meet my expectations, but it was still a good movie which made me jump a bit here and there.

2.  An American Werewolf in London - Wow!  I'd only heard bits and pieces of the movie's reputation...mostly how the werewolf transformation was still considered one of the best in film...based on that, I bought it, and watched it for the first time tonight.  I loved it!  Good mix of horror and humor, stunning effects...good acting, at least to my untrained eye.  Definitely impressed by this one.

Bill Cunningham New York

Charming film that follows this octogenarian legend who's been photographing clothing trends on the streets of NYC since the early 1960s.  Quietly capturing the city's unique cultures and fashion sense, Cunningham steals pictures more than he takes them and has consistently foreseen most major clothing movements, influencing both designers and the public with his keen eye and serving as one of the most important visual archivists of his time.

The Warriors: The Director's Cut

As a big fan who saw this now classic film when released in '79, I was horrified to see this 'revamped' version that director Walter Hill says is closer to his original idea.  Consequently this raw, quirky, made-for-a-Saturday-matinee flick has been altered by a series of bad-looking comic book motifs between each scene and annoying "Meanwhile on the other side of town" pop ups.  Adding insult to injury, a voiced-over intro explains how the story parallels a Greek myth, all completely unnecessary and ruining what was a perfectly great little action movie.  And as if that weren't enough, much of the wonderful and campy synth score is toned down, cut out, or replaced by popular songs.

Hill has desecrated his masterpiece and assassinated one of the best cult classics of the '70s.  If you like this film and know what's good for you, steer clear of either the "Director's" or "Ultimate Director's" cuts and get the original disc ;

Being John Malkovich - 5/5 - It blew my mind, then it blew my heart. Goddamn smart man. He also did Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, which i'd rate 5/5, too. Bittersweet.

What's the reception for Melancholia around here? At least of Trier's recent stuff, I remember Antichrist getting overall bad marks on this board. Well, hate me all you want, but I thought Melancholia was good to watch. Shame about the very last frames, though, they were awful. Don't know why, but I thought the first part could have been better off as a play (as in, theatre). Also, is Trier going to entertain us with visual "slo-mo ouvertures" for the rest of his filmography now? Not any satisfying hereon, but still better than Mallick's Discovery-Channel-like périple through time and space in The Tree of Life...

Wishful Drinking

Carrie Fisher's one-woman show about her ridiculous life as a child of celebrities, Hollywood secrets, her marriage to Paul Simon, how George Lucas ruined her life, and being diagnosed with mental illness.  As she puts it about this performance, "I'm talking about myself behind my back".  "I can't forget that f*cking hologram speech," she says sarcastically of Star Wars, "that's why I started doing dope".   Surprisingly funny and unusually honest, worth watching.

I thought Antichrist was awesome and I'm very much looking forward to Melancholia.

I just watched Win Win. It was easily one of the best movies I've seen in a while; really powerful and creative story with some great character development to boot. I'd highly recommend it.

Just curious, who here is watching these movies in movie theaters anymore?
Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

Transformers: Dark of the Moon

Cluttered and shiny third one in the series about how the Autobots lost the war and secret the Decepticons have on the moon.  Shia LaBeouf is very good in the lead and Ken Jeong, John Malkovich and Frances McDormand are hilarious in supporting roles but the plot is so torn between fairly serious sci-fi and absurd pulp that in the end it is a flick best suited to 13-year olds.  I guess that's no surprise.  This movie goes on and on and on and on and on--  considering these films are centered around a line of para-Japanese toys, the amount they've squeezed out of this franchise is remarkable.

Yeah! It's how I prefer to see the kind of film that I expect deserves the big screen.

A film like Zookeeper for instance, that I saw on a long (long, long) flight, was not the kind of film that I thought required me to see it on the big screen. Predictable, but I laughed a few times.

I work at a movie theater, so I get to watch everything for free Thumbs Up

Anybody see Drive? Incredible film, if you can get past the needless, overdone violence.

Thor

Finally a superhero movie that has nothing to do with superheroes, Marvel and Kenneth Branagh smartly made this one closer to Norse mythology than modern comicbook-dom, which after years of increasingly thin Spidey, Hulk, and X-Men sequels, is a relief.   Thor is fun, thoroughly entertaining, moves along well and is over the top in just the right ways.   Chris Hemsworth cast perfectly as the Thunder God with his classic thespian manner and Anthony Hopkins typically superb as his Father, both actors playing the near-ridiculous parts with utter conviction, as it should be.  Strongly recommended for two hours of quality escapism with a Tolkienesque eye.

^ I would say it is the other way around (but i see what you mean), since the myth of Odin and Thor is millennias older then Tolkien, and Tolkien is obviously influenced by old Nordic paganisme/mythology,

but i still see you point and i want to see that movie very much.
