^ Yeah so? I can swear in Scottish gaelic eg Pogue Mahone but by virtue of doing so is transparent self censorship, so both of us must give a branler?

1. Why do we want to swear ?

2. Why can't we do something more useful than debate this ? Helping young ladies over the roads, for example. Why this debate ?

Confused

We swear because we are repressed (this manifests itself in many forms of which swearing is but one instance)

Politeness originates in indifference i.e. it really doesn't matter ( I know it's a very unpalatable notion) but once you get your head round this you will be able to disseminate the angry (those who genuinely care) from the merely inarticulate.

I'm torn:
On one hand, there's no need to censor words.  They are just words and those who get offended, by something as stupid as four little letters, shouldn't be coddled.
On the other hand, it does make me feel more comfortable cussing up a storm here.

Time always wins.

There are about fourteen million things that concern me more than the auto censor.

My combined reviews of your two albums will be considerably less than fourteen million words.

I barely care enough about this issue to post here stating exactly that.

Everyone using a swear word without self-censoring would be breaking site rules and liable for punishment of some kind, of which we only have two: demotion and/or suspension - under some circumstances (lesser swear words perhaps) we may give people the choice, other times we may dole out both just for the fun of it.

And then there would be the accusations that Admins were spiteful and vindictive for punishing those who swear, and in retaliation we would have to permaban more people because we are spiteful and vindictive and don't like people making more work for us than is necessary.

Profanity is used regularly here. So this rule is obviously flexible or not applied always. Or do you mean circumventing the censor?
If I'm referring to the hypothetical case of the auto-censor being switched off how can I possibly mean circumventing it?

We could be anal about applying the rules and make everyone's life a misery (including mine), or we can be intelligent about it and let the occasional self-censored or auto-censored word slip by if it is obviously not used to cause offence or to be deliberately upsetting. Striking a happy medium between jocular banter among men of the world and Machiavellian application of the rules isn't really that difficult - because turning a blind eye is just another form of laziness and I'm well practised in that, not in the lack of will to do something about an infringement of the rules, but dereliction of the tiresome act of patrolling each and every post looking for them. Therefore in the spirit of give and take I don't think it's a huge ask on our part to expect people to police themselves and not over use swearing or over become reliant on the auto-censor when making posts.
What?

My suggestion: Abolish the "no profanity" rule, but maintain the profanity filter. I've never understood why both are in place. When I say "f*ck that" ... how can that be offensive to anyone? If I say "f*ck you" ... now that's a personal attack and could still be breaking site rules even if we don't specifically focus on profanity.

I have a technical question. Can Admin see what we have actually written? Is there a difference between f**k and f**k?

Well, it boils down to M@x then, and what his reasons for keeping the profanity rules in place are. I don't think that by loosening them up a bit this place would turn into YouTube. And even if it did, the rule could always be reinstated.

The auto-censor acts on data input, so the changed word is stored in the database, not the original. So in answer to your question, no we cannot tell the difference, but we do know you didn't mean fork, funk or fisk.

This in itself kills any idea of having the auto-censor as a client-side option.

For MMA he scrapped the rule and the censor. However, there it was messing up the URLs and biographies of a fair number of metal bands.

I went for option three.  I think it works as it is.  We can tell what people are trying to say and what is more important, what it means in context.  Most times people swear round here it is just for comic effect.

Nope, I don't give a flying f**k! one way or the other,
Help me I'm falling!
