I saw back a couple years ago that ManofMystery posted a poll about Johnny Cash's American Recordings with Rubin on the Def American label. Recently I've been listening to them a lot and I gotta say, though I don't consider it country-western (seems like rustic folk to me), I love them. Naw, I'm no country music aficionado, but I do enjoy Hank Williams Sr., some of the more depressing Merle Haggard, and that one Ween cd. Here's a conversation I had with my dad and cousin on the matter:
Cousin: [singing]: Don't let y'r babies grow up to be cowboys. Me: Hey, I like that song. Its Willie Nelson. Dad: [laughs]: No, its Ed Bruce. Me: Who? Oh, well I like it, and that one cowboy song Willie Nelson sings. What is it called? Long-haired country boy? Cousin: Nuh-uh. Dad: Nope, that's Charlie Daniels. Me: Hell! What IS his song? Isn't it Country Boy Can Survive? That's Willie Nelson, right? Cousin: Nuh-uh that's Hank Williams Jr. Cousin+Dad: [laughs].
That's how much I know about country music. But I digest - I really liked all these albums, all five I've heard so far. Is there anybody else that does, too? And hey, is there anybody here that can direct me to like-spirited material in folk and country-western? Might as well retitle this to 'Outhouses and Old Trains: The country music appreciation thread".

I've never had much interest in JC until Dean turned me on to his cover of Hurt. I still don't beyond that but at my age you can't not have heard is music at some point or the other. I watched a bio on TV not too long ago. Interesting guy.

Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

Oh, I don't much care for Ring of Fire and A Boy Named Sue and all that - just his American recordings/gospel material. I love gospel, well, old-timey gospel.

Ring Of Fire is actually kind of fun particularly if you hear it in the form of Zappa's live cover. Ow ow ow.

One of my favorite artist and honestly one of my first "obsessive" collections.
For me it's between the third and forth, Solitary Man and The Man Comes Around. I'll vote for the latter due to Hurt, and the AMAZING title track.
Fifth one is great too!!
All 3 are recommended for anyone interested in the series.

From what I've heard, I wouldn't want to miss anything from any of them, and that includes the heaping Unearthed boxset. For some reason his cover of Father and Son touches me a lot. Perhaps it's that, when he singing the 'I'm old but I am happy' part, he sounds more genuine than Cat (though I adore the original).

I honestly couldn't tell anyone my favorite of his covers, but i do love the song When the Man Comes Around. It surprised me when i first learned it was actually written by him. Very cool song indeed.

Tempted to say III just for Mercy Seat, but I prefer IV for the sheer poignancy of the whole thing.

However, I have both the concerts at Folsom and San Quentin Prisons I do like them

i like hte Trent penned song, i also had the privilige to see the man behind the song preform it with his band NIN, it was the bleakes concert i have ever seen, but awesome

Dean, my feelings exactly. That's why IV, and not III gets my pick. It's dreary, it's bleak, and it's consuming. The covers? Hurt, I'm So Lonesome I could Cry, Personal Jesus, and Danny Boy? All songs of religion, death, self-harm, and despair. And top it off with the originally penned title track? I get what you mean when you talk of the album's poignancy and congruity.
