Ah, yeah, I see how it works now. I'm just glad it didn't apply retroactively...Although I kind of wanted to be a PA celebrity. ;-)

Then the auto-censor should censor to something that is not immediately recognizable as a particular word.

I once proposed using nonsensical replacements of all the auto-censored words - needless to say this was taken completely the wrong way by absolutely everyone, humourless bunch that they are.[/QUOTE; I was just thinking about that myself. Whatever happened to that idea? I suggest using Evolver's Spock for the f word. "Spock you", "Go Spock yourself", "God, I need to get Spocked tonight", "Spocking A", etc.

I can understand your anger at me, but what did the horse I rode in on ever do to you?

Yes, I believe it's necesary to keep a certain level, and in my case, the only problem I had was with a band's name it was SWEAT WATER, until I learned a trick, it looked like this SWEAT**TER, but it wasn't as ridiculous as the Genesis forum
They changed the name Dick, for the word Thingy, so when I wrote about Iron Maiden, the post read "Bruce Thingyson"

Well, that's been fixed now and you don't need to use any tricks to get around it. So if you could remove the *trick* from your post so that it does not encourage the weak-willed and easily led to copy you that would be lovely.

A different forum I'm on does that. It was funny at first, but you'd need a system that randomly selects from a long list. The words "fridge" and "shirley" get more annoying to see than the expletives they replace
|
That's sort-of the whole point - those replacement words get old very quickly, but so do the words they replace. While through overuse we are inured to hearing swearing most of the time in our daily lives to the extend that we neither hear it or even notice we are using it, its constant repetition in print is just tiresome on the eyes.

How about we leave the swear censor the way it is, except on April Fool's it should replace ordinary words with swear words?

I am fine with the censor. I don't know why it's a big deal. If you don't know what f**k is when you see it written this way, then you don't need to know.

That's pretty much another way of saying that it's pointless. So, why can't it just be done away with?

I don't find swears offensive. In fact, they can be helpful in accentuating a point. That said, we are members here. We do not own the server, the software or the Internet connection the web site uses. There are reasons a web host may not want language like that on the site. First and foremost is accessability. There are plent of places that use net-nannies and the like that block web sites. A lot of these are libraries, where some people without Internet can go to get online. Whether the operators of these facilities are right or wrong is not the issue. However, I think we want as many people as possible to be able to get to the site. There is no reason that we members, discussing music and whatever, have to swear to make a point. Oh, and f**k.

Another thing/slightly off topic:
It is inpolite, slightly childish and barbaric to swear. You will sink quite low in most people's estimation if you swear. The English language also have enough words to play around with. Swearing is not necessary. I ran a swearbox in my office for a while. Though I got a nice letter from the local cancer charity, thanking me for the donation, it was quite a painful excersise which cut down my swearing quite considerable. My profanities are now the likes of holy squirrel and other animal replacement of swear words. Although bad habits is difficult to quit and I sometimes fall into old habits. Try quit smoking. Try quit swearing. Try stop snoring at work.... although the latter one is beyond the mankind. Censorship ? I would recommend people quit swearing everywhere in life. I would appeal to the good in everybody.

I was going to wait for the anouncement that HottieCow and HottieFool were collaborating with HottieRollins on a re-working of Rick Wakeman's The Six Wives Of HottieVIII, but that could be sometime away yet.

Holy Squirrel is probably the most offensive thing I've seen in print to date (I'm 49 and work in the debt collection industry) and it's on the next level of hell just below those who say frikkin'
I'm not condoning swearing but one of the most prevalent urban myths that still circulates today is that those who swear simply cannot articulate their ideas. This is unadulterated bollocks
complete tosh coined by denim shirted liberals we all had to endure as
schoolteachers during the 70's. I have a huge vocabulary and swear all
the time and the principle reason is best summed up by one Billy

I hate hearing casual swearing in the street. Where the F word is used liberally in every sentence. It's horrible. On the other hand a sharp "f**k" used sparingly is very effective and there is something very satisfying about calling someone a c**t! Occasionally. It's all context.

^ yep agreed Snowie you nailed the issue with 'sparing' as just like music, if you have unrelenting dissonance the listener just switches off, while the occasional and judicious burst of frisson retains its ability to shock or jolt the senses
