I am 19 now. I guess looking back on it, I did start in metal, but I moved into prog, and now I'm into avant-jazz, noise, Zeuhl, operatic fusion and all sorts of things that girls are turned on by.

my quick music history

Age 8-11: beatles, led zeppelin, beach boys, queen, u2 (all good music, but fairly broad) all of this changed when i was 11 and a friend showed me AC/DC.
12: getting interested alot more in zeppelin, buying my first band shirts, then by the end of elementary school, i am getting big into classic 'metal' like yngwie malmsteen, crimson glory, and motley crue. those are all still great to me. at this age i walso buy rush's moving pictures after loving them from the radio, but i have no idea they are prog.
13: hear dream theater and am amazed so i buy SFAM and love it. all the while getting more into metal, but sticking mostly to the bands i already know
14: big year, I hear Opeth's the drapery falls and am amazed, so i start getting into extreme forms of metal that i didn't like before.
15-16: my 'metalhead' years, going to lots of local shows, becoming knowledgable and stuff.
17: i start listening to classic prog and loving it.
18: i start getting big into avant garde metal and the like, looking for more challenging sorts of music.
19: zeuhl.

16 and primarily listen to prog metal but I'm VERY VERY picky.  I have a hard time finding old prog that I can really sink my feet into like I can with Cynic or Maudlin of the Well.  My friends crucify me for liking Collins more than Gabriel, and rightly so I suppose, but the only "classic" prog I could every fully get into is Floyd, and that being said I'd rather have nails shoved into my ears than listen to anything off of Dark Side of the Moon.  Animals, Wish You Were Here, and a handful of tracks off of The Wall I thoroughly enjoy.  I'd much rather pick up a jazz record than an old school prog record.  I love Pat Metheny and John Coltrane.  They're both phenomenal musicians.

I'm 16 too. I like Zehul very much but still can't appreciate bands like Maudlin of the Well.
I know 95% of the music I listen nowdays thanks to the Internet (mostly YouTube and ProgArchives) the other 5% is music like The Beatles, The Alan Parsons Project, and a bit of Queen and Pink Floyd that I started to listen thanks to my dad, even though he never introduced me into that music. Sometimes I'm listening to Supertramp or old argentinian prog bands and he recognizes some songs that he had heard on the radio back in the 70's ^^

I can't share this music with anyone! That sucks.
Sorry for my bad english ;)

I hadn't realized there was an age restriction associated with the appreciation of progressive rock. ;o
I'm 16, and I've basically been addicted to progressive rock for the past 3 years. Amazing genre, hard to not appreciate it.

I am 17 and lately I have been listening to Van der Graff Generator, Gentle Giant, King Crimson, Steve Hackett, Steven Wilson, Birds and Buildings, Spock's Beard, Sigur Ros, and Cynic.

Also, I just joined the site (even though I have been coming here for a few months now).

Hrmph.

The stereotype is definitely there amongst the so called 'purists'

Hrmph.

I concede there are a rare few who hold this view but you are hoisted by your own petard. Those people you might deem 'purists' are both young and old. I've never met say, a RIO/Avant snob over the age of 35.

The point, anyway, is younger people are likely to start with the heavy music. Which is quite logical and natural because heavy music has dominated rock for the last 20 years.  If you are an exception, great, but it's not a knock on you if you aren't.

I'm 18 now, but I've been listening to prog since I was 15. I hate Metal, therefor it's hard for me to like prog metal. I enjoy Mostly the symphonic and electric prog bands. The Itailan bands have a certain sentimentality for me as well.

The prog metal bands I could get down with are Opeth(later albums), Tool, Animals as Leaders and Dream Theater. Other than that, it's just noise to me...
In time, if human breed hate love and lies would be traits of mine. But I was of the future past and present time.
