I am 19, I listen will listen to any kind of music with reckless abandon and without bias (except commercial pop) and I am proud.

Well, I'm not 18 any more [22 in october now], but...I was pretty much raised on Floyd and Tull and got into Yes in the second semster of my 8th grade year... Rush, King Crimson and Genesis came later in my freshman year, and then came the more metal stuff with Tool, Dream Theater and Opeth [as far as prog goes] in my Sophomore year then after that I opened myself up completely to all music and it just went wild from there. that's just the basic stuff I remember.

I'd also like to point at that, funnily enough, I find Tool and Opeth pretty boring these days for the most part and as for Dream Theater, I only still love Images & Words - the rest is blah. The other bands, however, I can still put on any time, any album, any day, and completely dig it and get lost in the music for days. Also, this doesn't necessarily to apply to metal as a whole now that I'm older, either. There's a ton I still enjoy and there's more and more I'm being turned onto, still.

I tried to get into some of the other more venerated, more modern prog bands like Transatlantic, Spock's Beard and Flower Kings but... yeah, no.

Well, I used to be...

When I was 13 I was for the first time introduced to progrock and from that moment I became a fan, although it costed me yet three years to fully appreciate it, when I realised it was faaaaaaaar more difficult to compose (or even to play sometimes) than I could have imagined. Back then I still didn't like metal whatsoever, although I do have changed in that way.

As for now, I'm 18 and progrock is still my life, or more..

but i guess that doesn't count anymore=(

I was 15-16 when I got really into prog. A lot of Rush (saw them live when I was 18), Gentle Giant, Pink Floyd, Hawkwind, Jethro Tull (I was 15-16 when I saw them live), tons of Krautrock, Tangerine Dream (saw them live when I was 18), Eno, Nektar, Kraftwerk, and Klaus Schulze just to name a few. All I did during high school was play and listen to prog. I don't even know any prog-metal bands.

I started listening to Floyd, Genesis, Yes, Tull, and a lot more of the 70s prog at 12 years old.

thanks to my old man and his music collection of cassetes and his cassete player.

man, golden moments fisrt times I listened to genesis's Selling Englang... without even knowing what kind of music was it or what was the band of its music about. mindf**k indeed.

that's definitely not prog metal.:P

The only prog metal I even listen to is procupine tree, if they are even considered metal. Haha.

I started off very restricted and now I basically love all music. I just happen to be drawn towards prog the most. Give me a bit of Stevie Wonder any day though.

And no-more posting in this thread for me. I keep forgetting whether I've said all this before several months ago....

I'm 18 now but I got into prog metal when I was 15 thanks to my brother convincing me to listen to Dream Theater, I soon discovered Pain of Salvation, Symphony X and a couple of other prog metal bands. A year or so later I started exploring the genre more and listening to a wider range of prog.

As much as I hate when people on YouTube say tell their age and then say "...and I love progressive rock" just to prove that they are different, I'll do it just this once

I'm 16, and I don't like prog-metal or metal in general. Unless you consider Heart of the Sunrise prog-metal...which it isn't

18 years here.

The first song I listened which was fully prog was Aqualung by Jethro TUll, then The Knife by Genesis. So I can say I got taught in a prog-rock way, not prog-metal. Of course then I met Prog-Metal too, the first real approach to it was Ayreon... But still, now, I don't consider Ayreon properly prog-metal, it's more prog-rockish imho.

My favourite band of all the time is Minstrel (RPI), and both of their albums are in my top 5 best albums of all the time. Followed by Thick As A Brick by JT, Doomsday Afternoon by Phideaux and BE by Pain Of Salvation. Yep, Pos, which is marked as "Prog-Metal". But BE is EVERYTHING but Prog-Metal :P

Personally I don't even like "Classic Prog Metal". I mean Dream Theater's one, which has influenced 70-80% of the modern progressive metal bands. Pain Of Salvation is one of that 20-30% which has its own influences, and that's why I like them so much. The only band I appreciate of that prog-metal style is Shadow Gallery, at least Baker wasn't (rip) screaming like a fool lol

If you're younger than 18 just wait a while. Before you know it you won't be and then you can like Genesis. Headbanger

Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

I can see why prog metal is popular with the under 18s.

The majority of kids growing up would have only been exposed to the mainstream and most won't start questioning what else is out there until they reach their teens.

Prog Metal is a good transition for some as it isn't a million miles away from sounding like regular metal (a reasonably popular genre most would have been exposed to) so it has some familarity for the listener.

When I was 15 and in my Metallica phase (For the record, I still like them but nowhere near as much as I did back then!) I realised I needed to start listening to other bands and stumbled across Dream Theater. This led to me to then discovering the non-metal prog bands out there. It was quite hard though, I didn't quite get Close to the Edge by Yes right away, as it was so different from anything I've ever heard!

So it's perfectly fine for under 18s to like non-metal prog, in fact the more the better! I would say though that prog metal is probably an easier transition for most.

that's weird because I was definitely listening to plump in the night as well. It's just a really cool album. It really sucks I can't find any of their other albums besides grey and pink.
