No order:

Chris Squire
Mike Rutherford
Greg Lake (just because of the complexity and non-uniformity of the music, he doesn't repeat
a lot of structures like a lot of other bass players)
Eskaton bass player (forgot name)
Jeff Berlin

My favorite bass players fall into the jazz category, but in the "prog" realm:

Macca
Juan Alderete
Chris Squire
Roger Waters
Les Claypool

I was thinking about this a bit. This is what I'd say:

Martin Mendez (Opeth)
Chris Squire
Sean Malone (Cynic)
Jannick Top (Magma)  (or maybe Philippe Bussonnet, I can't decide)

Annnnnnnnnnnndddddddd Geddy Lee, John Wetton, Joe Lester (Intronaut,) and/or Tony Levin. Jeff Caxcide (Isis) and Mike Rutherford are amazing too.

Hopefully that wasn't too predictable.

As a bassist I must say I don't have much of a list of bassists... well people do say I play like a guitarist...
But! Few I do very much love!

Hugh Hopper
Jannick f**king Top!
Richard Sinclair
Tim/Jim Smith (well I think Tim play much of the bass in Cardiacs records, but Jim's the live bassist)
Jesse Krakow (Pak- one of the best damn bassists I heard)
Ron Anderson (also Pak- damn amazing as well)
Fred Frith
Igor Krutogolov (Israeli avant-klezmer-punk band- a beast he is)

Top 5 you say? Eh close enough
There be dragons

2) Ray Shulman
3) Mike Rutherford
4) Greg Lake
5) Roger Waters

(I would also include John Entwistle, Paul McCartney and Dougie Thomson if I could...)
[Surprised to see that Rutherford is finally having his work recognised ! Viva Mike !]

I'm wondering if Rutherford is just being mentioned because of the band he's in.
I thought he was an average bassist.

^ even more so Roger Waters. However, I can accept if someone really likes any of the two bassist styles.

I also thought that... but in my case it's because I really like his playing. The fact that he was in Genesis is a great "plus" in his career. I've always considered him a great player, although not matching Squire or Shulman (I shall edit my top 5...)
