As many of you know, the Groups Phase of the Post 70's Prog World Cup is reaching its end.

The next stage of the tournament will be the 2nd places poll, where eighteen bands that finished 2nd on their groups will be competing against each other and only 14 will continue on the World Cup (this poll will surely be divided into 2 groups of 9 and 7 bands advancing on each)

This days I've been thinking to make a crazy little twist on the tournament (only for this upcoming stage).

I'm planning to implement "negative votes". That is, on this new stage you won't be voting for your favorite. All the other way around. You will vote to eliminate one of the bands. It could be the one you hate the most, the one that eliminated one of your favorite bands, the one you care less about, or you could use your vote tactically to prevent the elimination of another favorite of yours. The variants are multiple.

I know this is a little controversial and that many people on this site don't like this kind of negative polls. And that's why I'm submitting my idea to a poll and letting you decide for me what to do. I'm aware that this could be harmful for example to bands on neo prog or tech/extreme prog metal, who have many haters on this site (hell, even Opeth could be affected by this new twist!).

But I'm sure it will be much more exciting as well. I think it adds a lot of spice to the tournament. What do you think?

I'm not sure if it's right to include this in the prog polls section, as it is not a prog poll by itself. Move it if it's necessary.

Well this is ultimately your poll, I don't know that I'd but this up for vote in the first place.  By the simple fact that you're going through all of the head aches and pains of running the tournament, it's your decision.  I'm simply grateful that you're taking the time and effort to do all the work.

Now, with that being said, you did put this up for vote and are looking for input.  It depends on what you want here, if you're trying to add more drama and controversy, then I'd say absolutely go for negative votes.  This will pretty much polarize everyone even more and probably give two bands a huge amount of votes, one from each side.  Do you want the Neoprog and the Zeuhl camp to loose their favorite second place band?

Also, if you do a negative vote poll, then you run a much better chance of people voting out of ignorance.  Let's say there is a poll of nine bands, of which I'm familiar with five of them.  There's a good chance that I like the five that I know on some level which means that I'd vote to eliminate a band that I'm utterly unfamiliar with.  Admittedly, this doesn't sound overly fair to a band like "Grails" who I simply haven't heard.  On the other hand, if I'm voting a positive vote, then I'm at least voting from knowledge and experience rather than blind luck.

As I mentioned, this is really your tournament and with the work that you're putting into it, you get to decide what you want to do and frankly, we really don't have much of a right to complain either way.  Nonetheless, I voted for positive votes.

Nicely put Tom. And thanks for the kind words.

We'll see what the majority wants. Even I don't know if I want this or not. If I were sure about what to do I wouldn't have consulted this on the first place.

^ You're welcome and I mean that, I appreciate the effort that you're putting into it and have enjoyed this tournament a lot.  This is fun.

I'd say positive votes.

Seems like a change is not gonna come. Even if Sam Cooke complains.

If I know all the bands I defintiely would prefer my vote to be cast on a negative basis.
If I don't know the bands I feel more comfortable voting for my favourite.
I don't know all the bands so ... positive.
