RIO/Avant Drop-In Centre

ARANIS' latest "Roqueforte" is a journey into chamber-like classical music with plenty of violin,piano,accordion,flute,bass.guitar and drums. This Belgium band scored a couple of important guests for this one in Dave Kerman(drums) and Pierre Chevalier(keyboards).These two are well known to Avant fans so need no introduction.You know i would have never dreamed that i would be into music like this when i was young.I'd just never warmed up to that orchestral/classical style until about 5 years ago.Now listening to something as masterful as this is almost emotional because it's so well done and so beautiful.I don't have any other of ARANIS' works but i can highly recommend this one.

Oh, you really should acquire more.  They're all at least very good - in fact, I may have enjoyed Roqueforte the least, but it probably needs more attention.

AZ's Faust is such a fantastic disc (and I think the closest in sound to Berlin at least that I've heard) and Berlin is right behind it IMO. The opening track is a true Tour-De-Force that I think is an excellent Summery of this point in AZ's career.   Yes that middle period does seem to take a back seat to the earlier stuff but i agree i don't think it should. I probably didn't notice this until recently because i've been binging on their records. Same with 5UU'S i just listened to Hunger's Teeth tonight and i love  "Well...Not Chickensh*t" but overall i prefer Regarding Purgatories.It's interesting though listening to these left wing,communist lyrics.They make me smile even if i don't necessarily agree with them all.This is what's Rio is all about though.Wyatt would be proud.     Ditto for me. Prior to two months or so ago I think I had two AZ records. I've gotten at least 6 within that time period.  Just hit all the right notes for me at this moment especially.   5UUs are a funny band for me. I've always liked the other "American RIO" artists much more...especially Thinking Plague and U Totem. But those last two albums have certainly grown on me. Then I'd probably give it to the early stuff before those middle two albums. Though Well...Not Chickensh*t is one of my favorite songs from them. Haha.   And it's true. I often forget the political bent of the original movement, but you're right, thats what it's all about. To be honest, I usually ignore most of the lyrics in my RIO (not becausr if their content just because vocals in this style to me work better as another instrument rather than a lyric delivering device). I agree with you Phil the lyrics aren't important at all,i just find them amusing sometimes.I'm not sure how serious they took the lyrics either as some of it seems to be sarcastic with a humerous bent to it. I listened to ART BEARS' "Winter Songs" the other day and purposely read the lyrics and didn't find any of it left wing but maybe they use symbolism a lot,who knows? Great album though.I'm not sure why i'm so drawn to the sound on that one.Of course having Cutler and Frith along with Dagmar on vocals is nothing to sneeze at. Okay the other side of the coin is ART BEARS' "The World As It Is Today" with titles like "The Song Of Investment Capital Overseas" , "Truth" , "Freedom(Armed) Peace" , "Civilisation" , "Democracy" , "The Song Of The Martyrs" , "Law" , "The Song Of The Monopolists" , "The Song Of The Dignity Of Labour Under Capital"  and "Albion Awake !" And lots of left wing lyrics too of course.Good album and Dagmar really shines here.The lyrics make me smile though.
