ARANIS' latest "Roqueforte" is a journey into chamber-like classical music with plenty of violin, piano, accordion, flute, bass.guitar and drums. This Belgium band scored a couple of important guests for this one in Dave Kerman(drums) and Pierre Chevalier(keyboards). These two are well known to Avant fans so need no introduction. You know i would have never dreamed that i would be into music like this when i was young.I'd just never warmed up to that orchestral/classical style until about 5 years ago.Now listening to something as masterful as this is almost emotional because it's so well done and so beautiful.I don't have any other of ARANIS' works but i can highly recommend this one.

The keyboards might be the most interesting thing about the sound here.I'm so glad to know his band as strange as this music is.LOL

The more I listen to late period 5UU's (the last two albums) the more I like them. Hard to say which one I like more, but I think RP takes it over Abandonship. Meteora is probably my favorite 5UUs track.

After listenening to all my 5UU'S albums of late i have to say that "Abandonship" is my favourite.I just checked my review on it and noticed i've already stated that so i guess this is confirmationBig smile.Udi did an amazing job on the sound on this one.

Abandonship is superb, I really need to explore their back catalogue.

Oh, you really should acquire more.  They're all at least very good - in fact, I may have enjoyed Roqueforte the least, but it probably needs more attention.

Thanks Patrick for the feedback.I think their latest is the only one with drums if i'm not mistaken. They seem like a bunch of young people who play for the joy of it all and i'm sure they're all classically trained. They were a real eye(ear) opener for me.

I have no idea if they were suggested, but if they were rejected they were probably too avant for the site. (Which I realize is a bit of a dubious concept in itself. Tongue).

Having said that, it's true. The other month I was looking for them on here and was surprised I couldn't find that.

Apologies over the lack of responses! Forgot about this thread for a bit. Embarrassed

Faust has quickly become my favorite Art Zoyd album. It's the perfect balance between the acoustic more chambery opening albums, more electronic avant-garde of their later albums, mixed with a good dose of rock (which I always appreicate). Some excellent chanting on this one too. Great feel overall that honestly works fantastically outside of the soundtrack vein. (Unlike Nosferatu, which I like, but I think doesn't stand on it's own as well as Faust.)

The Marriage Of Heaven & Hell is one I've recently got, and liked alot on first listen. Probably tied with Berlin on my list at this point.

They don't seem to have ever been suggested. I have a few of their albums from the $4 drillout, and I would consider them too "straight" free jazz for PA. Excellent music, though.

Listening to one of my favourite ART ZOYD albums in "Berlin".The big surprise is that it was released in 1987 which i swear was the worst year in music for me.So yeah this was a bright spot.I don't know what it is about this one but i love it.It's maybe not as dynamic or dark or experimental as some as it stays on a fairly even keel but this one infactuates me.

Wonderful album. Honestly, I know that the eary period is the one that seems to get the most praise, but I absolutely love the middle period (and even the later period). AZ's Faust is such a fantastic disc (and I think the closest in sound to Berlin at least that I've heard) and Berlin is right behind it IMO. The opening track is a true Tour-De-Force that I think is an excellent Summery of this point in AZ's career.

Yes that middle period does seem to take a back seat to the earlier stuff but i agree i don't think it should. I probably didn't notice this until recently because i've been binging on their records. Same with 5UU'S i just listened to Hunger's Teeth tonight and i love  "Well...Not Chickensh*t"LOL but overall i prefer Regarding Purgatories. It's interesting though listening to these left wing, communist lyrics. They make me smile even if i don't necessarily agree with them all. This is what's Rio is all about though.Wyatt would be proud.

Ditto for me. Prior to two months or so ago I think I had two AZ records. I've gotten at least 6 within that time period. TongueEmbarrassed Just hit all the right notes for me at this moment especially.

5UUs are a funny band for me. I've always liked the other "American RIO" artists much more...especially Thinking Plague and U Totem. But those last two albums have certainly grown on me. Then I'd probably give it to the early stuff before those middle two albums. Though Well...Not Chickensh*t is one of my favorite songs from them. Haha.

And it's true. I often forget the political bent of the original movement, but you're right, thats what it's all about. To be honest, I usually ignore most of the lyrics in my RIO (not becausr if their content just because vocals in this style to me work better as another instrument rather than a lyric delivering device). Embarrassed

I agree with you Phil the lyrics aren't important at all,i just find them amusing sometimes.I'm not sure how serious they took the lyrics either as some of it seems to be sarcastic with a humerous bent to it. I listened to ART BEARS' "Winter Songs" the other day and purposely read the lyrics and didn't find any of it left wing but maybe they use symbolism a lot,who knows? Great album though.I'm not sure why i'm so drawn to the sound on that one.Of course having Cutler and Frith along with Dagmar on vocals is nothing to sneeze at.

Okay the other side of the coin is ART BEARS' "The World As It Is Today" with titles like "The Song Of Investment Capital Overseas" , "Truth" , "Freedom(Armed) Peace" , "Civilisation" , "Democracy" , "The Song Of The Martyrs" , "Law" , "The Song Of The Monopolists" , "The Song Of The Dignity Of Labour Under Capital"  and "Albion Awake !" And lots of left wing lyrics too of course.Good album and Dagmar really shines here. The lyrics make me smile though.

I don't know why but I've always assumed Cutler was a very serious guy. At least he has that look and feel about him. Saying that I'm assuming most of the lyrics he writes are serious, although they may be using sarcasm/tongue-in-cheek humor/etc to get his point across. And I'm assuming the symbolism is high as well, being alot of his lyrics don't make alot of sense to me. EmbarrassedTongue TWAIST does seem rather straight forward though, which is never a problem. And The World As It Is Today is my favorite Art Bears album. Musically it's so powerful to my ears.

And just so I don't crowd up the next page with so many Hat posts in a row, I've relistened to both Abondonship and RP in the past two weeks...and damn it is hard for me to make up my mind. I think I'm now beginning to prefer Abandonship, if by ever so much. The first four songs and Noah's Flame are some of the best 5UU's work ever for me.

I agree with Pat until he says Roqueforte was his least favorite. Personally, it is my favorite. (Although I don't have their third.) However, their second is awesome. Less dark, less rock, more folky, but that pure Aranis sound is in tact. (And get's my toes a tappin' from time to time.)

Admittedly I'm just starting to get into their music (I was looking for them to get recs on which album to get first), but from the one album I have listened to I wouldn't complain if they were rejected for being to free/jazz/out for PA. (Of course, I probably wouldn't bitch too loudly if they were added either, but unless their other albums are different I won't be pushing for them.)
