Alan Loo (Rejected for Progarchives inclusion)
Memories (2001) Imprint: Musea
Track list: 1 - Over The Hill - (4'21) 2 - Spanish Highway - (4'12) 3 - Old Man - (5'07) 4 - Memories (I. Part One) - (4'01) 5 - Napoleon Way - (5'14) 6 - Last Dream - (3'28) 7 - Alone With You - (4'56) 8 - Midnight Sun - (3'26) 9 - Paradise Song - (2'39) 10 - Memories (II. Part Two) - (1'40) 11 - Angela - (4'24) 12 - Blue Light - (3'04)
Label info: Alert ! Alan LOO has arrived ! Accompanied by Alain BURGER, this
musician from Eastern France keeps us glad with his delicate
instrumental music, and compositions that are catchy as ever. His
picturesque and intimate Progressive rock is here as beautiful as it can
get, a little in the style of Jean-Pascal BOFFO's works. Recorded in
2001, "Memories" is sometimes jazz-rock, at times a little more rock...
Don't be a mere follower, just let this excellent guitarist's album take
you away.

Imago (Rejected for Progarchives inclusion)
Derrière Le Rideau (1978/2004)
Imprint: Musea
Track list:
1 - Après Avoir Collé - (4'26)
2 - La Dentellière - (3'49)
3 - Fanzine - (4'04)
4 - Dors, Dors - (3'49)
5 - Le Baba Débile Et Le Vampire Dément - Fable - (3'17)
6 - L'Ami Américain - (5'14)
7 - Le Cachot - (3'41)
8 - J'Aimerais Bien Gagner Le Hit-Parade - (4'15)
9 - Dernier Voyage - (3'33)
10 - Journey - (3'16)
Label info: IMAGO was a very special French band, inspired by Anglo-Saxon rock as
well as French variety. The musicians were probably the ones that toured
the most in France during the late Seventies, with much success. The
Musea reissue of "Derrière Le Rideau" includes all the tracks from the
album initially released in 1978. These ten songs are a mix of folk and
rock, of acoustic and electric instrumental parts, always dynamic,
inspired and moving. The funny, iconoclast and ironic lyrics are filled
with humor, lucidity and revolt against stupidity. After that third
album, the band noticeably recorded a late opus in the late Nineties.
Here's an excellent band, that remained underground but deserved a wide
recognition. To be rediscovered !

Les Couloirs De L'Amer Etonnant (2003) Imprint: Musea
Track list: 1 - Constellation Monoceros - (7'28) 2 - Le Tout De Rien - (4'07) 3 - La Sourde Oreille - (5'00) 4 - Les Couloirs De L'Amer Etonnant - (5'10) 5 - Abstrait D'Union - (5'04) 6 - Les Graines De Milet - (7'02) 7 - Que Restera-T'il ? - (4'37) 8 - Candide - (4'15) 9 - La Pomme - (3'29) 10 - L'Ethernudité - (5'10) 11 - Nouveau Né - (4'55) 12 - Vois, Comme Il Est Haut - (6'55) 13 - Poisson De Mars - (6'09) 14 - Bonsoir Lily - (2'08)
Label info: Thierry CRUSEM (MAMIE TONK) is a young talented artist from the Lorraine
region, in Eastern France. You just have to look at him in his eyes on
the cover picture of "Les Couloirs De L'Amer Etonnant" (2003), to feel
the incredible charisma that shines from him. Helped by his band L'AUTRE
SYSTEME, the singer takes the listener to his dreamlike world. And if
at first, you think it's the voice of Christian DECAMPS (ANGE) you're
hearing, that's purely by chance. Actually, this first discographic
tour-de-force shows a truly original music, between powerful Progressive
rock and typical French poetic songwriting. The lyrics have been worked
and polished to the maximum, during the three years it took for the
project to come to life. A need for perfection also showcased in the
beautiful packaging, as well as in a sumptuous production, courtesy of
Jean-Pascal BOFFO ! He and the numerous musicians that made an
appearance here have been recruited amongst the top of the local scene:
Thierry SIDHOUM (ANGE), Alain WITTISCHE, David METZNER, Félix PACI,
Christophe PEROTIN... As if it wasn't enough, the booklet introduces
illustrations by young and promising graphic artists. If you try to
forget that it was published by Musea, you could even have the feeling
it directly came from the catalogue of a major label ! Talent added, of
course... It's no doubt that if this artist have been helped by this
kind of label, you could have heard nothing else than his powerful and
charming voice from your radio set !

Strings Arguments (Not in PA database)
The Encounter (2003) Imprint: Musea
Track list: 1 - Improvisation - (5'30) 2 - From Sri Lanka To Titan - (13'29) 3 - Everything Becomes Circle - (8'28) 4 - Silence, Darkness - (15'53) 5 - Kyoto No Natsu - One Summer Afternoon In Kyoto - (12'15) 6 - Kundabuffer - (13'50)
Label info: STRINGS ARGUMENTS is made of three members of SIX NORTH (Respectively
guitarist, bassist and drummer), KBB's violinist and guitarist Hirofumi
OKAMOTO. "The Encounter" has been recorded live in Kyoto in 2002. Those
five wizards perform an exceptional instrumental music, and this for
various reasons: it's a kind of Progressive jazz-rock that combines
improvisations and written musical structures. Listening to this, you'll
probably remember Al Di MEOLA, WEATHER REPORT, Pat METHENY and Jean-Luc
PONTY, to give just a few examples. The violin's lyricism is perfectly
tuned to the two guitars' inspiration, and all this is supported by an
incredibly precise and groovy rhythm section. With both experimental
sequences and quite emotive melodious moments, STRINGS ARGUMENTS creates
a very much alive and dynamic musical world: simply brilliant !

S.O.T.E. (Not in PA database)
Time to End (2003) Imprint: Musea
Track list: 1 - The Blandness Of Being - (4'48) 2 - Morning Session - (6'15) 3 - Jack's A Friend - (3'41) 4 - The Days Fly Fast - (7'19) 5 - Something Building - (6'24) 6 - Fire Incarnate - (5'09) 7 - Bitter - (3'32) 8 - Victim Of Circumstances - (6'33) 9 - A Different Sensation - (9'31) 10 - Time To End - (6'22)
Label info: SONGS OF THE EXILE (S.O.T.E.) is a modern power-trio from the
Netherlands combining classic RUSH, YES, DREAM THEATER, Allan HOLDSWORTH
and Steve VAI into a powerful sound of their own. Six strong
compositions (Including one of over 23 minutes long) fill up an hour of
splendid guitar, bass and drums. Although the lyrics give somewhat
cynical view of the world they do fit the singer and the music
perfectly. Modern instruments like guitarsynth and six-string fretted
and fretless bass combined with emotion laden vocals have ensured that
SONGS OF THE EXILE received very good reviews in the leading Progressive
rock magazines in the Netherlands. Covering ten tracks, the following
album "Time To End" (2003) takes you from contemplative moments to waves
of aggression with everything in between in an hour of splendid music
in a style uniquely their own. On top of wailing guitars and complex
drumming the use of extended-range instruments, harmony vocals, guitar
and pedal synthesizers lay a colourful palette of sounds. It carries the
emotion-laden lead vocals telling the story of John, Jeremy and Jones
to their turbulent ending. A definite must-have for modern day guitar
oriented Progressive rock fans loving recurring themes and long
storylines in this collection of songs that can be listened to both
seperately as well in its entirety.
Label info: "Reasons" (2008) is a concept-album that deals with a lifetime (Time
seems to be the main theme for the band !) connected with the mind's
existential and philosophical concerns in each age of life. SONGS OF THE
EXILE is basically a "power-trio" (Guitar, bass & drums), with some
additional keyboards in the background. But the band's music has become
fully personal and difficult to categorise. The main initial influence
was RUSH, and comparisons were also made with QUEENSRYCHE, DREAM
THEATER's "Metropolis Part Two - Scenes From A Memory", or even Allan
HOLLDSWORTH and Steve VAI. It gives a good idea of the atmospheres in
that album, still dark and tortured. But the music has also become
really personal, powerful, diverse and constantly inspired, creating an
innovative blend of heavy-metal and symphonic Progressive rock. A must.

Adachu Kyodai (Not in PA database)
Adachi Kyodai (2003) Imprint: Musea
Track list: 1 - Back Track - (4'54) 2 - Mother Goose - (3'21) 3 - Push Me Into Tornado - (3'44) 4 - I Talk To The Wind - (4'04) 5 - All Shades Of Blue - (4'23) 6 - Cheap Day Return - (2'51) 7 - Erewhon - (6'34) 8 - Unknown Troops - (3'56) 9 - Spring Silky Shower Landscape - (4'05) 10 - Lemming - (5'40) 11 - When That I Was A Little Tiny Boy - (2'12) 12 - Guilt - (5'51)
Label info: ADACHI KYODAI is the name of a duet made of two brothers, Ryusuke
(Guitars) and Source K. ADACHI (Guitars & vocals). As influenced by
John McLAUGHLIN and Al Di MEOLA as by JETHRO TULL and KING CRIMSON,
those skilled musicians have played with international stars such as
Elton DEAN (GONG). After a first album called "Blood And Instinct",
those two Japanese musicians issue once again an album, this time
eponymous and co-produced in 2003 by the Musea and Poseidon labels. We
can then find here twelve concise and mainly instrumental tracks, some
original compositions and some covers arranged for two guitars (KING
CRIMSON's "I Talk To The Wind" as well as JETHRO TULL's "Mother Goose"
and "Cheap Day Return"). ADACHI KYODAI are two acoustic guitar
prodigies, full of energy, feeling and innovative musical ideas,
especially in the strings dialogue and in the rhythmic work. At the end
of the day, we have quite a good album, gifted with a high level of
musical quality.
Label info: Two years later, our two fellowmen are back with the brilliant "Xianshi"
(2005). The principle remains the same, the presentation still as
refined as it used to be. On the menu, eight original compositions, two
cover-versions (ROXY MUSIC's "Chance Meeting" and JETHRO TULL's
"Wond'ring Aloud") and a traditional song, everything containing
obviously the ADACHI KYODAI taste. Here are the ingredients: two
acoustic guitars, a touch of gypsy jazz, a pinch of improvisation and a
great measure of talent. Get started to come and have a nice meal !

Ausia (Not in PA database)
Kasa Kasa (2003) Imprint: Musea
Track list: 1 - Vision That You Give - (8'38) 2 - Night Dance - (2'45) 3 - When That I Was A Little Tiny Boy - (2'25) 4 - Indian Rain - (7'05) 5 - Housewarming In Alaska - (7'12) 6 - Mother Goose - (3'29) 7 - Short Summer In Valhalla - (6'53) 8 - Lost On The Way Home - (4'43) 9 - Kasa Kasa - (12'01)
Label info: AUSIA is clearly an original project, led by three famous Japanese
Progressive rock musicians: violinist Akihisa TSUBOY (KBB, STRING
ARGUMENTS...), singer-guitarist Source K. ADACHI (ADACHI KYODAI) and
Yukihiro ISSO at the traditional instruments (Flute, shinobue,
dengakabue...). Faced with such a line-up and realizing that "Kasa Kasa"
(2003) includes a cover of JETHRO TULL's "Mother Goose", we can expect a
classic Progressive folk-rock album. And that's exactly what it is...
Except that this album is everything but classical ! This wonderful
acoustic work is composed of nine practically entirely instrumental
tracks, which seem as if they had been taken straight from an improbable
parallel world... In order to get some idea of their style, you should
know that the influences of AUSIA include at the same time some medieval
music, some renaissance ideas, some traditional Japanese musics, some
Anglo-Saxon acoustic folk, some experiments inherited from Progressive
rock, jazz... The flute is energetic while surprising, the violin is
both subtle and furious, the arpeggios and guitar chords wonderfully
complete the instrumental conversations... A surprising exotic curiosity
to discover !

Philippe Cauvin (Not in PA database)
Memento (1984/2003) Imprint: Musea
Track list: 1 - Chanson Facile D'Amour - (3'58) 2 - Comme Un Miroir D'Echo - (2'57) 3 - Coeur - (1'55) 4 - Jeu D'Enfant - (1'36) 5 - Transe En Danse - (2'43) 6 - Pour Un Recueillement - (2'55) 7 - Air D'Elle - (3'13) 8 - Automne - (22'25) 9 - Plusieurs Regards - (2'50) 10 - Les Yeux Du Ciel - (3'07) 11 - Orémus Pour Toi - (5'26) 12 - Coeur A Coeur - (1'11) 13 - Tankanan (I. Première Partie/II. Deuxième Partie) - (7'39)
Label info: Disciple of the wizards, "One of the greatest French virtuosos of the
guitar", "A new trouvere", "A modern griot"... Here are a few sentences
chosen by the French press at the beginning of the Eighties, to qualify
Philippe CAUVIN's works. The leader of the atypic Progressive rock group
UPPSALA has reinvented his beloved instrument, the classical guitar,
and has created for the occasion a unique music. It can be described as a
delightful mix of middle-aged songs and current hymns. This is a
strange mix of classic language, church prayers and vanguard rock.
Philippe CAUVIN has one more thing playing for him: his voice. An almost
woman-like singing, displaying weird imaginary words, which has
apparently been made for us to dream. "Memento" goes one step beyond the first album, in the realm of
"spiritual" music. It showcases an ambitious epic composition, a 20
minute-suite for classical guitar, percussions and voices. Several
unreleased tracks are present here, recorded in 1980, 1989 and 1996.
Adventurous, fascinating, mystical and moving: Musea reissues once again
a timeless work of art. Not to be missed !

Climage (1982/2003) Imprint: Musea
Track list: 1 - Rocktypicovin - (2'51) 2 - Bagatelle - (3'30) 3 - Boucle Aux Oiseaux D'En Face - (2'35) 4 - Petite Etude Numéro Un - (2'20) 5 - Fantaisie Bordelaise - (1'52) 6 - Vertiges - (8'09) 7 - Balade Imaginaire Avec Liza - (4'10) 8 - Voyage A Bord De La Nev-Rose - (5'05) 9 - Petite Etude Numéro Deux - (1'43) 10 - Lolita - (4'21) 11 - Para Las Senoritas - (2'46) 12 - A L'Infini Pour Ma Mère - (3'08) 13 - Chanson Facile D'Amour - (3'14) 14 - Vocalises Aux Promeneurs Déconcertés - (4'04) 15 - Paradoxe Numéro Deux - (1'29) 16 - La Libellule Déclamant - (2'56) 17 - Deux Divertissements - (4'20)
Label info: His second solo album, "Climage" (1979), is the fruit of five years of
work. Acclaimed by the musical press, this unique album reveals a
beautiful, strange and sensual music coming from another planet, like a
challenge for the time.
Label info: IGZIT-NINE is a current Japanese band, inspired by the best anglo-saxon
Progressive jazz-rock school. It is formed by two former members of
BRAIN SALAD, Noboru INOUE (Guitar, keyboards & percussions) and Emi
HATSUSAKA (Keyboards & percussions). The rythmic section that
appears on the first eponymous album has then left the group, replaced
by that of SIX NORTH ! An obvious evidence of the musical style chosen,
without even mentioning musical quality ! Recorded in the year 2003 on
the Poseidon label (Distributed by Musea outside of Japan), this
masterpiece is performed by real virtuosos, that are also true melody
lovers. There is no acrobatic musical exercises to fear here ! Here are
eight instrumental titles, dense and carefully written, linked at the
speed of light. In the same vein as the best SIDE STEPS, IGZIT-NINE
unites melodic sense and musical dynamism, with a feeling not unlike
YES'. No doubt about it, KENSO is no longer the one and only king of the
national scene !

Wolf (Rejected for Progarchives inclusion)
To Be... (2003) Imprint: Musea
Track list: 1 - Breathe Again - (3'29) 2 - The Yearning - (5'19) 3 - Angel Of Love - (3'31) 4 - Shadows Of Shame - (5'04) 5 - Human Rights - (3'39) 6 - Celtic Rain - (3'31) 7 - Feel - (3'35) 8 - Can't Let Go - (4'00) 9 - Burning Walls - (3'07) 10 - She - (4'50) 11 - The Breeze - (3'15)
Label info: Wolf HOELLER has been the keyboardist and composer of the famous French
Progressive rock band LA ROSSA, which only album "A Fury Of Glass"
(1983) has been reissued by the Musea label some years ago. "To Be..."
(2003) is the name of a joint-venture between the German musician and
Jean-Pascal BOFFO, famous French guitar player and sound engineer. With
the assistance of Hervé ROUYER (ANGE drummer), WOLF creates eleven
pop-rock songs displaying a wide range of influences and inspirations.
It includes celtic music, neo Progressive, blues and many others, from
Mike OLDFIELD to THE WATERBOYS. With very intense vocals, somewhere
between David BOWIE and Robert PLANT, he proves his ability to sing and
play straightforward rock music. Violin and bagpipes parts are just
brilliant, and all the musicians more than perfect. This album is an
excellent surprise !
Label info: TRIO 96 is the misleading name of a current Japanese Progressive
jazz-rock band, alternatively existing as a quartet and as a duo ! Truly
different from the rest, its music owes as much to free-jazz as to the
Canterbury School or works by Frank ZAPPA. The result is instrumental
tracks both dense and energic, based on semi-improvisations and
performed by virtuosos. Let's give a special award to a real frenetic
drummer. "Quartet 1999" leads the listened to wild musical landscapes,
with nervous and tense guitar chords, frantic rhythms and astounding
saxophone parts. Recorded four years later by the guitar player and the
drummer alone (The same line-up as Larry CORYELL's at the end of the
Sixties),
Label info: "Duo 2003" appears to be less frantic but still experimental, sometimes
reminding the KING CRIMSON's Eighties period. A special care has been
given to guitar chord sounds and percussive drumming, lifting this disc
to a rich and fascinating experience. Not to be missed !

Musea Records is a massive label in terms of releases. In the decades they have existed they have assembled a back catalogue of immense proportions, and while they have many productions out on various imprints the main label is still the one most impressive in size. Original releases, reissues of old material, regional reissues. Spanning all across the progressive rock universe and then some. I guess most are unaware of the sheer size of it all, and will feel slightly flabbergasted when scanning this list.
I will try to update this one as new productions are released, and long term I plan to try to link to PA artist and album pages respectively as or if applicable.

Musea Parallele was initially an imprint set up to handle jazz and fusion, but when Great Winds took over that function in 1999 this imprint appears to be used to cover various types of special cases after that point.

It's not actually quite in release order, as Musea haven't steadily followed their catalogue numbers when releasing new albums. But it does follow the catalogue numbers.
Those who'd like to see the list in alphabetical order - copy an paste it into an excel sheet. Then it'll be in alphabetical order in two seconds.

Lu7 (Not in PA database)
L'Esprit De L'Exil (2005) Imprint: Musea
Track list: 1 - Itsumo Hajimari - (1'30) 2 - Canary Creeper - (5'11) 3 - Golem - (6'45) 4 - Bluetail Of Passage - (4'33) 5 - Air Flow - (5'16) 6 - Secret Recipe - (4'50) 7 - L'Esprit De L'Exil - (7'03) 8 - Mariana's Garden - (5'30) 9 - Danse Rituelle Du Feu - Ballet Musique El Amour Brujo - (5'52) 10 - Ripple - Mizu No Wa - (6'20)
Label info: LU7 is the name of a current Japanese Progressive rock band, centered
around the charming Luna UMEGAKI's keyboards, and around virtuoso
Tsutomu KURIHARA's guitar. Let's also note the guest appearances of
several musicians: a drummer, a percussionnist, a bass player, female
and male vocalists, a violinist, a bagpipe player... The duet defines
its ambition: "We try to create the imaginative sound, which can make
you feel various views and colours.". Published as a joint-venture by
the Poseidon and Musea labels, the second album "L'Exprit De L'Exil"
(2004) is a real revelation in the instrumental Progressive jazz-rock
field, as it's full of qualities no so common in this genre. No question
of cliches, coldness or sterile virtuosity here: the density of the
seven pieces (Mostly instrumental) is impressive, as are the splendid
melodies and the diversity of the atmospheres, from happiness to
melancholia. Musically speaking, the listener is free to imagine what an
desinhibited Allan HOLDSWORTH could have composed, when discovering
celtic or arabic music. A tasteful menu, isn't it ?
Label info: The first album "Efflorescence" (2002) had only been available through
Internet until the Poseidon label got involved. After the successful
"L'Esprit De L'Exil", it eventually gains a proper CD release today. The
listener will recognize that the style is the same, and if he is keen
on Eighties American jazz-rock (Featuring guitarists such as Pat METHENY
and Lee RITENOUR), he will certainly be delighted ! Now we can be sure
to count on LU7 for the future...
