I'm not sure if this has been discussed so I'll ask the question. I want to get a bass but I'm not sure which one to get a Rickenbacker 4003 or a Fender Jazz?

Well i'd love to have the money to be faced with that dilemma
 I'd adore to own a Rick, especially a classic but the Jazz is probably much nicer to play

the only way to decide is to play both, and different styles of both and see what feels good to you. And you shouldn't just limit to two brands just because thats what you idols played. try many many basses and see what feels the best to you!

^ That. Personally, I like the feel and sound of an American-made Jazz
better than a Precision or a Rick, among tons of other makes and models.
Looks wise, I've always loved the Rick. But seriously, find a local
shop that specializes in basses and check out all the stuff you've never
heard of before. You might be surprised. Whatever you do, do NOT go to
Guitar Center to buy a guitar.

I have a Fender P bass but i havent tasted a Richenbacher yet, but to me Fender and Richenbacher is equal to what I would use them for.
as a bass player I both after a thick crucnhy sound which i got from the Pressiton bass, but the attack and edge i would like the Rickenbacher, for now I have a Fender P bass 4 string and a Yamaha 5 string (dont know which model). Yamaha go that thich nice sound and Fender have that nice attack and crunchy sound, I only lack a Rickenbacher |

I love both dearly, and they can both sound amazing. IMO it's hard to play a Ric due to the cover over the pickups. Fenders are really heavy, though, and tend to hurt my shoulder.
I can't afford either, though. My next bass is this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e2pCbl8Gpxk It has that awesome GLUG GLUG GLUG tone I like.

Just like guitars - I think itīs down to whatever style you play and prefer. And you can get almost any kind of sound out of the instrument - you just need a bunch of pedals. I know heīs not a bassist, but just look at Buckethead, who takes cheap-ass guitars and makes them into his own little thang. Itīs not what you play - itīs how you play it - and if your wallet starts shaking like a frightened dog by the thought of having to buy a Ricky, youīll probably be able to match that sound a whole lot cheaper

It depends upon what you want to play, and who your influences are. I've been a Squire freak since, oh, 1971 or so, so of course I play a 1973 Rick 4001.
These are neck-through-body instruments and are very high-treble sound! Very much suited for the Squire/Ray Bennett/Gary Strater approach of using round-wound strings with a plectrum. The Rick is a very fast bass, I often play leads on it that rival my leads on a Les Paul. Fender basses seem "thumpier" to me, more suited to playing with fingers vs. plectrum. Of the two, I'm more of a Precision fan, the Jazz has a very narrow neck. Best advice is to go to shops & play as many as you can. The less-expensive Mexican-made "Standard Fenders" are very good instruments and will save you a fair amount of change, but they are also worth less upon resale.

A few days ago I got to play a Rickenbacker 4003 bass and I loved it. From the way it looked to how it felt and how it sounded. I had it hooked up to an Ibanzez amp and it sounded great.
