...It's time to build another clubhouse for another "Appreciation Thread" which will rival the Italian one I'm going to inaugurate it by posting this excellent video
Well, I'll start with my own experiences, which are so far limited to the 70's- early 80's
So far, I've taken into consideration rough distintions in exploring the old spanish scene, dividing bands in different currents: (geography is also considered)
Of course those divisons are necessary artificial and only loosely indicative of the wider spectrum.
Of course I missed many great bands, II'm just including what I already have in my collection.
El Rock Andaluz
GRANADA Great band, my favourite. I even rate them higher than Triana because I think that here local folk and rock merge more harmoniously imho
TRIANA A legendary group with a pretty unique sound nonetheless, "Abre La Puerta" and the whole Patio album is top material. Passionate vocals.
GUADALQUIVIR I'd need further listening to judge
IMAN CALIFATO INDEPENDIENTE same
El Rock/Jazz Catalān
GOTIC Another favourite of mine, a band that impresses without trying, dreamy sound and relaxing atmosphere. The last two tracks of their album are monumental.
ICEBERG Popular band, perhaps not of my taste but extremely competent and technically talented, I need to listen more of them.
Basque Prog
ITOIZ I have a sweet spot for them and for the Euskera, shame they got a bit too pop after three very good albums.
ERROBI I can't appreciate this very much, perhaps the tracks are not very focused and tend to meander a little
LISKER A pleasant but not exceptional band a lā Jethro Tull with sparse vocals.
Italian-Inspired bands
CRACK Great band from Gijōn, long and excellent symphonic tracks, not so inspired ballads, but very poetic lyrics ("Oė al viento prometer, a los cardos un jardėn...")
TARANTULA Can't remember much honestly. Can't stand the vocals though.
CAI Could have placed it in Rock Andaluz but I really appreciate the italian influences here... particular voice, nice synth work
BLOQUE...
Northern Spain folk inspired bands
?
I'm looking to discover bands of this kind, I remember reading in some sort of Prog Guide that there were some interesting Cantabric-Galician-Asturian groups with a rock/folk attitude, with traditional instruments etc... Can't remember the names, so perhaps someone might point me to those.
And of course other bands that can't be placed in any current, like Fusioon, Eduardo Bort, Canarios, Granada...
So, now tell me about YOUR views on what you already have! :)
And of cousre this is also the place to ask informations and share videos about newer bands form Spain Edited by Luca Pacchiarini - July 12 2011 at 17:50 |

In talking to a vendor, I heard that the Spanish Prog titles are going out of print "at an alarming rate." So buy them while you can! By the way, great thread, Luca! I'll post my thoughts soon. Edited by Todd - July 12 2011 at 18:44 |

I love Itoiz, and Ezekiel happens to be one of my fave folk albums! This is a cool idea for a thread - thanks Luca
![]() Yeah - almost forgot about Atila´s wonderful album Reviure. It just pushes all the right buttons for me - a great combination of symphonic and psychedelic spacerock

I think MEZQUITA is my favorite of the genre. Their album "Recuerdos de Mi Tierra" is a beautiful, dark masterpiece. Although I love TRIANA, and the Mezquita album certainly owes a lot to Triana, for me Mezquita is simply perfect!

In case you were curious (as I was), the first 3 or 4 pages (out of 10) of the thread contain some good recommendations and discussion. The rest of the thread becomes unfocused and repetitive.

It was already suggested, and some including me approved it, but sadly it wasn't made a separate PA genre.

The only prog band I know from Spain is Triana, and for me their first two albums are a gem, 5 star albums both. The third one was somewhat weaker. I don't know the rest.

I really enjoy Gotic but otherwise I don't own much from Spain. Eventually I'll have to remedy that, right now I have my hands full!

Gotic - Escenes
A classic late 70s release with great sound on the remaster. Probably not typical to Spanish prog, in that they sound like they could hail from anywhere. A mix of instrumental prowess not unlike DFA, with plenty of color. But the jazzy sections are mixed with pleasing pastoral softness (which conjures the imagery of the great artwork) and TONS of melodic flute. Bright crisp percussion, lots of e-piano and occasionally fiery guitar solos, some acoustic moments, no vocals, some organ, and again, a flute lover's dream. That's the 60 second review ![]() ![]() |

By the way, does anyone have informations on the legendary Gotic second album?
It is rumored that they recorded a folow up to Escenes, in a jazzier vein... some say it's not available, some say it can be founda as bootleg, some say it's an official release...
Anybody?? I'd love to hear it
