A lot of (hard)rock bands have, often as their signature song, a sort of Bolero track. It starts like a ballad and ends heavy. I am talking about tracks like LedZep's "Stairway to heaven", Deep Purples "Child in time", Judas Priests "Dreamer deveicer". But also modern tracks like Black Mountains "Tyrants" or what about Tenacious D "Tribute". Even proggers like KC have a track that fits the description with "Starless".
My point is. Are these tracks a sort of subgenre and can you name more examples?

Kansas had 1 or 2 , but I don't recall the titles.These "Classic Rock" songs were popular in the 70's mostly due to radio airplay. Although "Stairway to Heaven" was the most popular, "Child In Time" was played on Classic Rock radio in the daytime. This was when radio stations thought they were cool by grabbing a track or 2 from a good selling album and rotating it through out America's work day. Although many of them were not in fact edited and released as singles or 45's....the FM radio stations promoted the songs. Some of them were shortened and released as singles later on. "Roundabout" by Yes was a single that I bought and as time progressed most people got to know the extended version from Fragile due to that radio airplay I make reference to. People were used to saving their money, buying the album, sitting with friends and reading the album cover as they played the album over and over for hours. By pulling specific tracks off the record and rotating them over the air,....people seemed to eventually desire to purchase the album just for that track. From a business point of view .....it worked. People used to buy Zeppelin 4 just to hear the entire record. This went on for quite a few years prior to "Stairway to Heaven" being singled out. To most fans then,....it was merely just another song on the album. Thanks to radio.....that all changed.....and most people began to buy Zep 4 just because it contained the song. Congratulations! Another plot or crime in history.

I too have seen Mountain on several occasions and like everyone previous has said they were fantastic in concert. I'm also saddened to hear of the recent medical issues of Leslie West. Having his leg amputated due to complications of diabetes. I hope he recovers and still able to perform some how.
