Under what letter do you file the following band names?
The Alan Parsons Project [A or P] Il Berlione [I or B] A Triggering Myth [A or T] La Otracina [L or A] The Devin Townsend Project [D or T] 5uu's [F, or 5; if 5, before A or after Z?] Béla Fleck and The Flecktones [B or F] The Robert Fripp String Quintet [R or F] Mike Keneally & Beer for Dolphins [M, K or B] Yngwie J. Malmsteen's Rising Force [Y, M or R] My Bloody Valentine [M or B] SBB [before Saga or between Saga and Schicke Führs Fröhling] Alex Skolnick trio [A or S] and which comes first, Paul Simon or Simon and Garfunkel? (note I did not ask about Jethro Tull and Pink Floyd, as they have only one obvious answer!) Frank Edited by infocat - July 10 2011 at 02:52 |

The Alan Parsons Project [A] - because it's the band's name
Il Berlione - B, because "Il" is an article A Triggering Myth [T] La Otracina [O] The Devin Townsend Project [D] 5uu's [5, before A] Béla Fleck and The Flecktones - B The Robert Fripp String Quintet [R] Mike Keneally & Beer for Dolphins [M] Yngwie J. Malmsteen's Rising Force [Y] My Bloody Valentine [M] SBB [between Saga and Schicke Führs Fröhling] Alex Skolnick trio [A] and which comes first, Paul Simon or Simon and Garfunkel - Simon and Garfunkel first, then Simon, Paul Edited by NotAProghead - July 10 2011 at 04:51 |

For bands named after their leader, I prefer to keep them with the surname, i.e. Alan parsons Project under P etc. This means that they are kept together with any solo albums.
The definite article in front of non-English language band names is trickier. I tend to defer to whatever the locals would do. I simply ignore the word "The" (except for The The!)
A triggering myth etc, I would put under A.
Re S&G, yes S&G first, and any other Simon (space), then all Simon (commas)
Others such as 5uu's depend on what the band actually call themselves. Probably under the number 5, like 10CC etc..
What i find more difficult is duet pairings, such as Daryll Hall and John Oates. Are they Hall and John Oates, Daryll, or Hall/Oats, Daryll/John, or Hall and Oates, etc.

Any band named after the full name of a person WHO IS A MEMBER OF THAT BAND goes under that person's last name. (Consequently, the Marshall Tucker Band would go under M, Abe Vigoda would go under A, etc.)
I ignore English articles (A, An, The), and foreign-language articles IF the band's name is in their native language. I alphabetize numbers as though spelled out. Ditto the ? in ? & the Mysterians. Abbreviations like Mr. (e.g. Mr. Bungle) are left as is. I would alphabetize !!! as though spelled "chk-chk-chk", as that is the accepted pronunciation of their name. Any unusual or special cases, I usually wing it. I've actually seen Jethro Tull alphabetized under T in record stores, as well as Judas Priest under P. I even saw one record store that used to file Elvis Presley and Elton John under E. |

I have to agree, all bands' names with indefinite article are under A on PA: http://www.progarchives.com/bands-alpha.asp?letter=a

Beefheart goes under C for me. If the band is name of anyone other than an actual member's name I put it under the first name. (I hope Don hasn't legally changed his name to Captain Beefheart.) I put A Triggering Myth under T as I treat A's like The's. Mr. Bungle goes under Mr. and not Mister for me of course. If it's somebody and the somethings then I put it under the somebody's last name. I think my alphabetizing rules were in synch with what this site does since before this site existed.

Yeah it's not a hard concept. You can do what you want, but Captain Beefheart and The Alan Parsons Project would be under C and A technically. It doesn't matter if Alan Parsons is his name, it's not just him playing solo music, it's the name of the band.

Can't agree re Alan Parsons etc. Where the band name includes their leader's name, for me it goes under the letter of that person's surname.

For what it's worth I would file The Alan Parsons Band under A, in the same way that The Beatles go under B, because that's a band name. The fact that it contains a person's name is immaterial.
Alan Parson's solo material would be under P.

Like I said, do as you wish, but I'd imagine this topic was aiming to find the correct answer, which is having Alan Parson's Project under A. It's not just Alan Parsons, it's the name of a group. I'm sure Lenny Zakatek, Duncan Mckay, and Eric Wolfson are not represented by Parsons, Alan

For me, if it is an individual artist, the recording goes under the surname (ie., David Bowie under B, Frank Zappa under Z); however, an imaginary band name goes under the first name: Pink Floyd under P, Jethro Tull under J, and Alice Cooper under A (because Vincent Furnier only officially adopted the name as his own in the mid-70s, and my Coop collection only goes up to Billion Dollar Babies). As far as bands that start with a preposition, I ignore it (hence, Beatles in B, Who in W). |

Well when I refer to The Alan Parsons Project, they always get the abbreviated APP with me, not TAPP.
Simple. The does not precede ALAN for filing purposes. :) As for full name bands Ie. Steve Hacket. I take the surname. It makes more sense. That's all I guess I can say really. |
