People who like cheesy neo-prog don't piss me off, they're just listening to music that I don't enjoy, and hey, it really is just a matter of opinion. It's the people with their last.fm accounts listening to Faust and Beefheart trying to act like they're listening to some deep music that you'll never understand that piss me off.
That's nothing against people who actually enjoy these artists, which I'm sure there are, but man some people just come off with this subtle sense of superiority nawmeaaaaan?
Kidding? Faust makes a lot of beautiful music. Let me guess, you listened to their debut once.
Alright you got me

Yes, but you should check that you're actually right before pedantically correcting someone. ;-)

Some people are jerks about their musical taste, but in all of my internet travels I have never met someone who was pretending to like avant-garde music to try to be cool.

You've obviously never been on /mu/
And you kind of have to sense it, you know? It's not super obvious

Trolling people on *chan really doesn't count. But even if it did, that doesn't make these imaginary people that discussions of avant-garde music always seem to center around any less of a strawman.

Defensive, much? Anyway, Henry Plainview said what I wanted to. And it's not just this thread, Polo has the habit of correcting people when he's not exactly sure of where he stands either. Like, saying Death CREATED death metal. Oh, I see!

We've just have had a, well, confusing discussion over the statements of one who seems to come across as an avant garde elitist a few pages back, so it's not imaginary. But I agree that I haven't met people who pretend to like avant garde or mostly any kind of music for that matter to fit in and sound cool.

That's what I'm talking about. I am not denying people can be elitist (although I think avant-garde fans in general are more likely to believe that all sound is purely subjective), but complaining about fakers and writing nonsense about the emperor's new clothes is a fundamental part of discussions of avant-garde music with non-avant fans just about anywhere on the internet because if I don't like it how could anyone else? But these hypothetical posers don't exist in any significant numbers, if at all, and they never have. If these people actually existed, the non-avant fans would be able to provide an actual example and would not explicitly exclude the actual avant-garde fans posting in the thread in a vain attempt to be less offensive.

Slaughternalia, what is it with you and thinking that people who listen to Beefheart are "trying to be deep on their lastfm charts"? I listen to Beefheart because I happen to enjoy his music and I'm sure many others do as well.

To be honest, it's because I used to do stuff like that. That's why I deleted my last.fm. I found myself avoiding some music, and listening to different stuff. Weak and lame, I know, but I REALIZED it. I figure a lot of people are doing it without even realizing it you know?

Well I'm not.
I very well know of some members who do but they aren't very honest about it. I'm glad you are. Those who do it tend to be.... Annoying.
