In this situation I would get the real album, but I know that when the album first came out the CD was much more expensive. Obviously they lowered the price - and you'll always find such situations. Last weekend BTW Amazon offered the top 5000 MP3 albums for EUR 4.89 each - I ended up buying about EUR 100 worth of music, more than 20 albums. It works both ways - and as always, CAVEAT EMPTOR.

Exactly ... and that is all anyone here is saying - regardless the packaging or the file format we buy what we prefer when a preference is available and most of us will pay what we think is reasonable for the format we want. However if downloads were always more expensive than CDs I don't think that would hold true because what you are paying for then is convenience and immediacy.
And I did the same in HMV's sale when they were offering CDs for £3.99 - so it's still working both ways - however given the choice I spent my £100 on more than 20 CDs you spent your €100 on more than 20 album downloads, we're poorer, Amazon & HMV are richer and everyone is happy. ^ If band X is in league with the music industry and I enjoy their music, I don't mind "jumping through the hoop". The primary objective for me is still to acquire the music - so I'll gravitate towards downloads, since most of the time they are the best match to what I really want.

I know Mike;;;; that's what I meant in my last intervention...
-----------------------------
and of course it pisses me off to buy a new or old ECM album at €17.50 (that's pretty well the standard price everywhere in the Benelux and Germany)... Even the ECM rep I spoke with yesterday at the festival told me that it was a policy they won't budge on... (little does he know that you can get ECM for as little as €8.00 plus postage on Amazon)....
He then told me that the orderiing policy can be quite a bitch as well, as some labels force on you some 50 copies if you order directly or if else you have to go to the ditributors (Bertus in Belgium, for ex....therefore whatever you don't pay in postage costs, the middle man takes roughly the same margin....
He (shop-owner & ECM-rep) admitted to most of my points, but he also says that the high-price for big-selling albums sort of reimburses the losses incurred with the release of albums that will not make break-even point, and Mafred Eicher (the boss label) already knows it ahead of time, but goes ahead and gives the artste a chance.
-------------
what really pisses me off in this industry is that the percentage of that full-price is going to the artiste >> it's pityful, unless you sell millions of them.....
But losing physical albums will simply make everyone lose something.

Why doesn't amazon or itunes offer wav or flac? Also, do you think vinyl usually sounds better than CD or is that a myth too?

Because they're large files compared to mp3/aac and 99.9% of their user base doesn't care. |

Sure he was ... and is. I didn't mean to say exclusively on eMusic and Amazon, but rather "exclusively via downloads". And I only mentioned this because Sean mentioned him earlier in the thread.

He prefers digital ... what's your point? (quote: "... but the advantages [of digital] I think outweigh the disadvantages of analog ..." and "I don't think I'd be the one to say "I think analog sounds better" ... ")

Wish Amazon.com offered downloads ro Australasia. This " Out Of region" response in a global market is rediculous. I guess that is why Apple are strides ahead...

There's this endearing crackling that only vinyl can add to a recording. It really makes the experience for me.
Just kidding. My parents had lots of vinyl that I listened to as a young child. I grew up on cassettes that turned to mud because I left them in the car. Any actual discernment I have is all well into the digital era.

I have not checked lately, but last I heard Microsoft was suppose to add Australia for the Zune Pass subscription service, not sure if that also was to include the 10 free song downloads per month. Not sure if you download the software you can purchase music, would have to setup a Zune account.
Just a thought for you

Understood.....although there are some pretty good lables out right now making excellent re-issues on 180 gram vinyl. I just bought Judas Priest "Sad Wings of Destiny" re-issued by Koch Records, amazing! And I cannot find a better sound than the 30th anniversary edition of "Dark Side of the Moon" on 180g vinyl I bought several months ago...brilliant!!
But that's just me...!!

Gah! ... I actually made my original 1973 first pressing DSotM vinyl into a wall clock in the late 70s because I'd worn it out and had to replace it (I've since replaced it two more times). On buying the first replacement I was a little disapointed to see they'd changed the pyramid on the label ... if only I'd know then that my original solid blue pyramid version was quite rare I wouldn't have made a clock out of it
